IF Given The Choice Between An S-Class, 7-Series, A8 OR A Land Rover Range Rover LWB, WHICH Would YOU Pick And WHY?
In the past 12 months, Land Rover dropped an all-new addition to the big daddy Range Rover model. Not seen since the 1990s, the company debuted an all-new Range Rover Long Wheelbase model. This means that the vehicle was extended 7.8 inches and 7.3 inches were added in the back seat.

Obviously, that's an incredibly impressive amount of space added for rear seat passengers. Considering the standard wheelbase can be a bit cramped in the back, it's a big deal.

But in a world where the Mercedes-Benz S-Class is king and is flanked by the likes of the BMW 7-Series and Audi A8, does the Range Rover LWB make a case for itself? Essentially now there's four choices in this market for a limo but only ONE sport-utility vehicle of this caliber.

That said, IF it were YOU picking to add to your stable, WHICH would it be and WHY? A Range Rover LWB, an S-Class, a 7-Series or an A8?

If I am riding then I would go with the Range Rover for the superior all weather and all terrain capabilities. It also may be a little safer in case of side impacts with the elevated seating position.

Here here! Agreed RR LWB all the way, no contest. There's a sense of physical and imposing presence that the RR has which sedans all lack. Additionally, it offers the same level of comfort, refinement and insulation as the other 3, while also supplying just enough sportiness for the driver to stay interested. If I was to drive around my in-laws or prospective investors, it would be the RR.

As a personal driving machine where I carry just one passenger next to me, and wanted both of us to be bathe in luxury then it would be the MB S-Coupe over the 6 series, although a Bentley GTC would be better for another $100K.

I'd have to concur with valhallakey. I'd go with the RR LWB for it's versatility and all-weather capability. Of course, I'd update my AAA membership and ensure I have a second car available at all times :-)

S Class if it's a car.

I don't like SUVs except to run to Home Depot so RR would never come in the picture. If it were a HD-runner, then it would need more than 8' of internal space w/ seats folded, so RR would still not cut it. Just a very pragmatic perspective.

BTW, went to test drive the S Class, Maserati and Jaguar yesterday. The Jag was very disappointing. Ride wasn't tight and tranny was jerky.

The Maser, while nowhere near the S Class in terms of refinements, was a lot more fun to drive, for what it's worth. I am definitely leaning that way at this time for my winter DD. (Boston area so AWD was a pre-condition for consideration.) My only concern is reliability... So I may lease for a trial period.

Again, just $0.02 to add to the above mix.

My wife twisted my arm severely to buy her a new S class. Having owned one two model generations ago I was not thrilled by the prospect of spending so much for a car that once left me wanting...wanting better responsive steering, wanting some feedback as to what wheels were doing, wanting some soul, etc etc. As a happy wife is a happy life I bought one for her. After two months of ownership I am blown away by this car. Great ride, great handling, lots of character even fun. I now look forward to driving this car when ever I can. Its a big sedan that an enthusiast can love and enjoy. I don't know about the other cars but this one is special.

My pick is the Range Rover because Land Rover dealerships usually have a Starbucks coffee machine so you can drink your favorite brew while waiting for your Rover to be fixed.

Can I have both the S and the RR?

Without question, RR LWB. Sedans are the new wagons. Old man cars.

For me it'd be the S Maybach Edition. The Rover will spend most of its time in the shop, not be as agile, likely not quite as comfortable and as a matter of taste it's just not mine. Furthermore I have a distinct feeling that there will soon be a Maybach edition GL 550 which will be a better vehicle than the Rover.

Interesting comments.

According to the latest reports a Mercedes-Maybach GL-Class is on the way.

I would stick with the S-Class (having owned 3 of them). Just an excellent vehicle. I have to say, though, in NYC and the Hamptons, the Range Rover LWB is really the "it" car to have at the moment. There is a 12+ month wait for one and if you own one already, you can flip it for $30K over sticker immediately. Its not that much more functional than the normal RR (unless the driver is 7' tall and needs to carry rear passengers - but on the outside, it is so hot looking - really gratuitously lengthy. Longer is better, right?

As for the rest of the bunch - Maserati Q-Porte is fantastic; 7-series is really not in the race (unless you were dumb enough to own/lease one already and you take another one because BMW throws so much cash on the hood - so its $400/month cheaper); Jaguar XJ (tiny interior more the size of E-class/5-series); Audi A8 (either you are in the Russian mafia or else you have a cheap lease)

I would have a hard time choosing between the RR and the S Class...

Personally, I'd go with the RR LWB as I like its rough and tumble attitude.

But, I have to caveat that with the S has better technology, use of materials and is so well done. A logical person would chose this over the RR. While the Mercedes can be a little over the top depending how you option it, it is the smarter choice at the end of the day.
