REVIEW: Has The All-New Benchmark Arrived? The 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Makes Its Presence KNOWN
Typically, the second largest purchase within a household is an automobile. The first? A home. Because of this, vehicles have always remained a status symbol whether you live in the city or the suburbs. Let's face it, this is what has become the go-to method to determine an individual's fiscal well being: what do they drive?

If you've been doing your best to keep up with the Joneses in the auto department, you may have noticed something interesting in the past several years. Luxury automakers are starting to comfortably dip their toes into entry-level-priced waters, and non-luxury marques have started to offer standard equipment and options not previously seen in vehicles of their respective caliber.

2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

We're living in complex times.

These days it's not completely uncommon to see a newly minted college undergraduate starting their career with an equally new Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class. Hey, sometimes you have to reward yourself. But if you find that a bit too plebeian for you, there's good news. The three-pointed star is still building an entire product portfolio of options for you.

In a busy year of all-new product introductions, one of the latest offerings from Benz is the all-new C-Class. Although it was formerly an entry point for many Mercedes buyers, with the all-new CLA the C has been given the chance to move up market. In other words, it's a much nicer product but it will cost you a few more greenbacks.

My specific tester was a C400 4MATIC that featured aggressive, AMG style treatments and a host of other goodies — more on that later. Let's take it from the top.

2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

The 400 is equipped with an 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine good for 329 horsepower and 354 lb.-ft. torque. To say it is quick would sell its capabilities short. The pick up is downright sporty in this model even when you're driving it in its standard Comfort setting. Zero to 60 happens in 5.2 seconds — I think that proves my point quite well. And while the mill is masterful in its own respect, the transmission also deserves a nod of approval. Some autos with seven speeds swap gears too frequently and it gets old real quick if it's not especially smooth. In the Benz though it is remarkably on point with shifts — they happen when you'd want them to — and they're not jarring, not even remotely.

While these are two very critical points for any luxury car, there is just one thing that separates this car from all the others. That would be its ride quality. The tester sent my way was equipped with the AIRMATIC Package, which arms the C with an air suspension. For years automakers have been building vehicles with this technology; however, it wasn't necessarily done right and it was never offered in a vehicle at this price point. This is a BIG first for the luxury space as the C is ushering in change. To say this car rides great on an air suspension is, well, an understatement. It's perfect.

If you leave the driving settings in Comfort, you have an auto that rides nearly as well as the S-Class flagship. It eliminates most of the harshness you encounter with one of the New York Tri-State region's famous craters, and it makes the vehicle feel as though you're gliding along the tarmac. If you'd like the ride to be a bit more stiff at speed then feel free to tap the rocker switch to dial in the sportier settings. The critical differentiator is, unlike other poorly tuned air suspensions I've experienced in much more expensive products, "float" is completely in check. This is a good thing because there's nothing worse than feeling like you're in a 1970s Cadillac that floats, dips and dives in all the wrong ways — it can be nauseating and there's zero hyperbole when I write that.

One of the things about the C, over the years, is that it's always tried to mimic the big daddy S-Class. The exterior sported similar design cues but it was on the inside that it was clear this was the company's starting point. To be straightforward, the past C-Class interiors weren't particularly nice. In some cases they were downright ungainly and cheap. In the last-gen C, pre refresh, I remember thinking "how Chrysler!"

This can't be further from the truth in the all-new C though. This thing is staggeringly good. In fact, it is undoubtedly the best interior money can buy in this class right now.

2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

There's a multitude of reasons for this but the two biggies are the selection of materials and its touch points. The smell of the leather seats and the well-trimmed door panels are super high quality — they makes you feel as though this is a much more expensive vehicle. In addition, the center stack's buttons all feel nice to click. This isn't a C-Class that boasts parts that feel as though they were sourced from the Chrysler bin when the two auto manufacturing giants were one, years ago.  It's a proper Mercedes that, in my opinion, eclipses the current E-Class' interior.

Being that it is a C though there is one qualm. Rear seat space can be rather tight if you're traveling with a pack of adults. If you'll be chauffeuring clients or entertaining friends you better make sure to spend time in the back before making a purchase decision. Of course this assumes you like your clients and friends, and want to ensure they have a nice ride too.

Elsewhere inside, the C400 is a technological tour de force. Over the years I've been an advocate of Mercedes-Benz's proprietary infotainment system, COMAND. While some say it is hard to navigate, I don't think they've spent enough time using BMW's iDrive system that relies on a lot of iconography and sub menus. And then there's Audi's MMI unit that has become so annoying with its "four corners" menu set up that I think my blood pressure actually rises when I have to use it. To me, COMAND is the most intuitive and has the smallest learning curve. A new addition to Mercedes' system is the touch-sensitive pad that hovers above the rotating clickwheel. I found it to be a nice complement but, ultimately, unnecessary. Thankfully, when I did use the pad, lag was non existent and it wasn't sloppy as I found in the latest Lexus products that use a touchpad.

The real magic happens though if you option the C with available safety and driver assistance technologies. Called Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive, this technology suite takes yet another page from the S-Class' book. Essentially, the C can be optioned to be as close as possible to autonomous driving in a production vehicle thanks to five systems that use a variety of cameras and radar to ensure your safety at all times. I'd need another 1,000 words to explain it all, but I will confirm it all works completely fine and I was not hesitant about using the systems one bit; however, I turned them off because I actually enjoy driving.

So, what does this all mean at the end of the day? Simply put, the C-Class is the all-new benchmark in its class. I think this is the car to have. Skip the Audi A4, BMW 3-Series, Cadillac ATS, Infiniti Q50, Lexus ES/IS and anything else you may consider. It's not even close, the C400 is that far ahead of the others. As I write this, I am struggling to find negative things to point out. That's how much I liked the all-new C.

Every time I stepped in and out of the C400 I was staggered by the "mix." It was super luxurious when I wanted to waft along, a sports car when I felt like having a laugh and its interior is simply fantastic.

There's one minor problem though. At the time you'll be reading this the C400 will be out of production and you will not be able to order one straight from the factory. What's left in dealer inventories will have to suit. If you're not acting on impulse or completely impatient though, the good news is that an all-new C variant is on the way. Dubbed the C450, it will boast more power and is due to arrive stateside, give or take, in September. Don't make a mistake: wait and order it.

The Good:

- Unquestionably, the all-new Mercedes-Benz C-Class has the best-in-class interior
- When equipped with the AIRMATIC air suspension, it rides nearly as good as an S-Class
- Fantastic "mix" of performance, refinement and comfort

The Bad:

- It's still a C-Class, which means the back seat is tight
- If you're looking for a good deal, you will most likely only find cars equipped with MB-Tex WITHOUT the critical AIRMATIC package — this is what makes the car actually worth it
- The C400 is no longer in production, you will have to deal with what's sitting on dealer lots for now — the C450 is expect to launch in September, give or take

The Lowdown:

If it were my money, there's absolutely no question or hesitation that I would want the C400 in my driveway. Forget Audi, BMW, Cadillac, Infiniti, Jaguar, Lexus and anyone else you can think of. To me this fight isn't even close. It's a landslide for the C-Class. In fact, I think that all of the automakers are now BEHIND a generation when it comes to competing with the all-new C. That means the only manufacturer bringing something to market that even has a shot at playing will be the all-new, upcoming A4 that still won't be here for what I am guessing is an estimated 12 months. That said, due to Mercedes ending production of the C400, if you want the peppier C you've only got two options: 1) Take whatever you find on a dealer lot now, which means you'll have to settle for MB-Tex — ugh — OR 2) Order a C450 and get it how you want in September.

If this wasn't an issue a family member of mine would be driving a C400 right now over their recently acquired, all-new BMW 535i xDrive. Frankly, none of us are enthused by the BMW.

Overall it's a good product, but, for me, there are some downsides. The tail end for 3/4 view looks droopy. From dead on behind it looks boring and cheap in the same way the ATS does. I dislike with a passion the infotainment screen that looks like someone duct taped an iPad there. In a crash, it looks like it could come loose and be a projectile. I'm sure Mercedes has guarded against that, but I don't like it.

Of the Germans, I'd take the BMW 3 first, then the Mercedes C, and finally the A4.

Beyond that, however, the Genesis is simply too good to ignore and too reliable to dismiss. I would slot the Genesis between the A4 and Mercedes C on my short list.

What? No photos of the creepy 'sweating' vinyl seats? Afterall, nothing says German quality like high-end vinyl seats that sweat with chemicals.

There's a huge list of products that experience quality issues. Is the MB-Tex "bleeding seat" an issue? Absolutely, but considering my test car was equipped with leather, it obviously didn't concern me in this review. Harping on that issue isn't going to change a thing. It's still a fantastic product and better than the other autos available in its respective class. I am sticking to it.

You may have noted we've covered the issue on AutoSpies previously and have been keeping an eye on the matter.

I think this review is absolutely spot-on. Granted, my experience is based on my drive of the C300 4Matic, but it resonates with similarities. I test drove pretty much every car in this class and the C just stood out head and shoulders above all. Sounds like a bit of hyperbole, but trust me, it's not. It was the only car that made me remember the experience for a long time after I tested it. To me, this car has the perfect balance of dynamic driving and relaxed luxury.

The IS felt tighter and its steering was connected to my brain. But its engine needs to be retired and it's pretty cramped inside. And I still loathe the center console climate control center that looks right out of the 80's.
The 4 Series definitely was right up there with the C. Maybe it handled just slightly better and its ride was on par, but its steering felt more disconnected and it didn't feel as committed to its line. And, unless you put the piano-black or glossy wood accents, the interior seriously looks ashamed to be in a Civic.
The TLX definitely leans more towards luxury with a very quiet, but imperturbable ride. It cornered with not-overly bothersome roll and its interior was nice, but lacked pizzazz. You get what you pay for, really.
The Q50 unfortunately needs a huge re-do. It never stayed in a straight line. It cornered like a two-tier tour bus. And its steering truly felt like it detached from the column. The interior material quality is nice but the design leaves a lot to desire.
The Genesis, while nice, felt heavy and lazy in comparison. Probably the best design in this price class, but its body paint just seems dull in any color I've seen. Or maybe it's a lack of some of the creases and such that reflect light, but it doesn't stand out on the road. The G seems more of an alternative for the Lacrosse or ES, leaning heavily towards relaxed luxury.

Regarding the C's info screen, I didn't mind it at all. It took a few minutes to get used to, but once you started using it, its placement and design disappeared. It's perfectly placed and perfectly functional.

I drove the C300 and was not impressed. I don't like the iPad and have heard its going away. That engine was not as refined as what this article says about the 400. No question though the interior is insane, (except the iPad) and I agree its an industry benchmark for sure. I would not say this is an especially beautiful car either, the styling is crisp but I actually like the ATS/CTS styling much better and find the 3/5 & A4/A6 boring. cidflekken - you didn't mention the ATS/CTS but IS/Q50 and TLX, none of which can compare to the Cadillac's or this C IMO. I think the 4 Series is leaving most folks largely unimpressed as well. That said one thing I did not see on this C400 article was price. I imagine this car with these options was pushing $60K so at what price greatness? $60K for any car is heady territory and I'm sure this one is special, but not for me... Next!

I had originally intended on driving the ATS and CTS, but I knew, at the end of the day, neither would be a serious purchase for me, so I didn't bother. The ATS looks like a previous gen Camry with a Cadillac grille; it looks like it should be in a class below. The CTS looks much better in print than on the road and looks like it should be going right up against the Chrysler 300. I'm sure both drive amazingly well, but if I were going for steering and handling only, I'd go with the Lexus IS or GS. If I needed more power, instead of the CTS VSport, I'd go with the Audi S6.

So what did you get? I agree with xjug this C is probably $60K+... Is this the best car out there for the money, I'm not so sure.... Cid - you need the Meds if you think the TLX, G50 & GS are better than the CTS and the S6 in a lot more money than a VSport. Also the IS is ugly.... GS is too. ATS looks like a Camry and a class below, that's pretty lame. The 300 is essentially a 10-15 yr old platform and the CTS is 1 and excellent... Your opinion is your opinion I guess...

I would agree with xjug, I drove the C300 and thought it not as refined as it should be. This C400 again, in full agreement, is a nice piece, but equipped as the luxury car it should be... well hey Agent00R how much was it? Hate to continue the stream but xjug was also right about the other cars quoted, they're just not in the same league. The ATS & CTS stand on their own, they're terrific cars and much better than the Acura/Infiniti or the IS/GS cars. Who builds the perfect car? However, with the new line up of engines quoted in the other piece, they will be even stronger competitors. Where I live they are also unique in a sea of old A4's, 3 Series and ready for off lease C Class cars. The public will eventually find them, they're that good, and they're much better looking than so many others. The Camry comment...c'mon that's just plain wrong or you need a new prescription. Since I have an opinion and an $%#hole, not sure where I fit in this chain, but he has many good points as he usually does. The number of ups vs downs indicates he's got some support.

I can see that Agent00R really love this car, and with good reason. I'm also waiting on the C450 to replace my E90 335i. I actually prefer the aggressive exterior of BMW's 335i with M sport package, but its the BMW interior that is the huge turn off for me. Luckily, the 340i should be unveiled before the C450 arrives, so lets see how BMW responds. If the c450 was available today, it would be good bye BMW for me

There is one glaring omission from the available options, the new C class is the only car in its segment that does not offer a heated steering wheel. I hope that is corrected in the 2016 model year, as for those of us with harsh winters, heated steering wheel is nice to have, something you would expect on this price point. You can get a damn Ford Focus with heated steering wheel, for crying out loud!

Yes, the retracting screen LOOKS nice and can be a talking point, but at the end of the day, is serves no real purpose besides offering just another thing that can potentially break. When you are driving, the screen needs to be visible 100% of the time. And when you're not driving, well, you're not in the car to see it (and who care what passersby might think).

If only all these amazing features and luxuries came with RELIABILITY. Holy hell, MB has descended below VW Passat in terms of initial reliability - seriously?! MB used to stand for rock solid engineering, not fancy technology that breaks in the first 3 months of ownership. MB in the 80's meant a car that would LAST for a long time. MB today means flashy technology with no hope of working without ongoing maintenance every 5000 miles.

I'm so disappointed in how MB's priorities have been lost. The new S series is now known for being the most unreliable luxury sedan compared to all others, from Cadillac to Audi to Lexus to Bentley, the S series is DEAD LAST, about where Maserati is. UGH.

I walk by these things everyday and to me the S-Class silhouette doesn't transfer well to the smaller C-Class. The small greenhouse and sloping back reminds me of a mushroom or grimace. The interior in these pics looks very nice, minus the screen.

It's a good looking car even with the lame iPad screen. However, Mercedes has a long running competition with Volkswagen/Audi for the most reliability problems. Reliability needs to be a design priority, not something left for the dealers to address.

Funny how everyone gripes about the screen. Personally, I think it works and isn't a problem at all. I'd much rather have the thin, "tacked on" unit than a bulbous dashboard that looks like its from the late 1980s or early 1990s.

00R, isn't Benz already going to update it to be more similar to the S-Class display? As one reader commented about "Opinions are like a@@holes...everyone's got one". I agree with him. I just came back from a conference I had in Phoenix, AZ. I was there a week and needed a rental car (and since the company was paying for it), I got a MB C300 rental.

HATED the always UP NAV screen; it was actually very distracting. Since wife has MB GLK350, I called the local MB dealer to ask about this always up NAV (when I got home). My salesman there said the feeling is running 2 out of every 3 people HATE it ALWAYS UP. He said people have made comments like it's one of those old "Garmin" stuck on.

The other issue was the ROAD NOISE coming inside the cabin. It was so loud I had to turn the radio up to drown it out. I think they should have it disappear or make it part of the dash like the E class and GLK models.

I haven't seen/heard a thing about them making a change on C-Class' screen.

IS screen is too small now. BMW's widescreen format is pretty great, IMHO. GS also benefits from massive 12-inch widescreen. What I like about the latter two is that their in-dash integration is pretty harmonious, unlike say the all-new S-Class.

Such a great little package in need of some polishing. The C450 should have come with the new 9G transmission like the GLE Coupe does with the same engine. The factory has to got get control over the small fit and finish issues that are popping up, ASAP. They should have actually kept the C400 in luxury trim only IMO. Everyone might not want a full on sport C450, but then again Audi does the same thing with the A4 to S4. Gutless A4 or balls out S4. NO middle ground. Thank goodness the C300 is a good drive itself. This C450 will get some serious consideration from me, but only after I see the next E-Class.
