Huge, BMW service bulletin on twin-turbo V8's MY 2008 to 2013 - lots of parts and lowered oil change intervals

On December 29th, 2014, BMW released Bulletin "B001314" or the "N63 Customer Care Package " affecting any vehicle that saw use of the 4.4-liter V-8 (N63B44O0) within the 5 Series, 6 Series, 7 Series, X5, and X6 model lines manufactured between 2008 and 2013.

This is a 2-part campaign by BMW for cars with the N63 engine. It was announced on 12/29/2014 and called "N63 Customer Care Package", bulletin B001314. The highlights are:

- check the timing chain for stretch; replace if necessary
- check the following items and replace if necessary: fuel injectors, mass air flow sensors, crankcase vent lines, battery, engine vacuum pump, low pressure fuel sensor
- change the oil service interval to 12 months/10,000 miles

Even if your car is out of warranty (ie, 5 years old and has 200k miles), it is covered by this campaign and costs the owner nothing. The dealers are instructed to call all N63 owners in their area and schedule the cars to come in for this service, pending the dealership's availability. The dealership is instructed to provide a loaner car of equal or higher class to the customer (per N63 Customer Care Package Outbound Service Script document).

BMW is also offering extra incentives for owners affected by this campaign to trade in their N63 vehicle and purchase a new car (called the N63 Customer Loyalty Offer, details in a separate sales bulletin).

Also associated with this campaign is the "N63 Customer Appreciation Program". The dealerships are authorized to provide the customer with a gift of $50 value. This could be a gas card, gift bag containing BMW Lifestyle products, vehicle detailing, etc.

Interesting, I had not seen anything about this motor having issues and now with this campaign it seems there are serious issues with it. Nice to see BMWs response, wonder how they have been handling things up to now? Does it affect the M motors based off this engine?

Can't believe the oil interval was LOWERED to 10,000 miles. WAYYYYY too long IMO. Just causes headaches for those picking up used M3s. The fact that Audi and BMW have these stupid OCI lights that tell you when to change the oil is uber garbage. I would never buy a used one solely based on the fact that after 5 years of longer-than-it-should-be OCI's those engines probably have way more wear than they should. What happens if you track your car once a week. That oil break down 10X faster.

psst. This recall has been going on for 2 months. Every V8 Turbo gets looked at that is the N63 engine. BMW is standing behind their product and have been very proactive with this update to the engine.

No need for the N54. That engine has been on the sh*tlist for years. Everbody knows what they're getting with that one.

The N55 hasn't really seen much action.

The N63 has had known issues for the past few years. If you follow any BMW forums, there are all kinds of problems, mostly with sensors and not the engine. If you do a VIN check, you can find out if you have a bad one.

As with any car, do routine maintenance. These high mileage oil changes are a gimmick. Considering the same oil will run through the turbo itself, logic would tell you to change it often. I drove my CSRT4 like a bat out of hell while I owned it, but I changed the oil every 3k miles. I never had a single issue with the engine, and it had over 100k miles.
