France To Allow 14 Year Olds To Start Driving City Cars - Should The US Consider The Same?

Renault today announced that a new, lower-powered Twizy would soon be available in continental Europe for 14-year-olds to drive - but that it wouldn't be imported to the UK.

It's all part of a harmonisation by the EU of driving licences across Europe. And because the Twizy counts as a 'light-motorised quadricycle', it has been approved for road use in France by children aged over 14, once they've got the necessary BSR road safety certificates.

Previously, they had to be aged over 16 to drive light quadricycles on the public highway.

There HAS been a disturbing lack of fatalities among 14-year-old drivers in France of late, so I can understand the reasoning behind it.

In theory starting early has merit, how many pro race car drivers started @ 3 in go carts versus those that started in 16? But that is on a controlled environment. If anything I think US has an earlier learner's permit age than almost any other country I believe?

Sure - Just as long as Agent 009 is also in the Quadricycle

Do we even have quadricycle here in the States? I mean it doesn't have a V8 nor can it towe a boat, I can't imagine why we would ever allow such a thing to be sold here.
