#NYIAS: Bentley Calls Out New Lincoln Continental As A Copycat Design - Do You Agree?

It's inevitable that car designers take inspiration from their competition – indeed there are very few cars that could be described as truly original – but sometimes this level of 'inspiration' is deemed to have crossed an unwritten boundary and into the realms of plagiarism.

According to Bentley's chief designer Luc Donckerwolke, Ford has crossed that line with its new Lincoln Continental concept, a full-size sedan which launches at the New York auto show. He wasted no time pointing out the similarities. "I would have called it Flying Spur concept and kept the four round lights," he sarcastically noted on his Facebook page. The statement set off a flurry of supportive comments – such as this one by another professional designer: "I thought this was only done in China? Finally a 'Bentley for the masses' though..."

The rear 3/4 is a lot of Flying Spur and that's the best view of the concept. The front 3/4 roofline has a similar roofline but at least that you can pass off as a standard luxury profile.

So...the upcoming Bentley SUV wont look like a larger or more luxurious version of some other popular SUV? Bentley need to chill on this. Though I like the new Flying Spur, it's still easy to see the Audi A8 in the basic design.

The minute I saw the Continental concept, I thought Bentley. It's more than clear and evident where the inspiration came from. But I didn't think twice of it since they are aiming for very difficult clientele. The designers do have a point though, regardless of price class.

I don't see the connection. To me, they look like entirely different cars.

The two cars do share a number of elements that aren't exclusive to any one car, such as 4 wheels, 4 doors, a center hood bulge, and so on.

Actually, Lincoln is borrowing more from Kia, Hyundai, and Acura designs than from Bentley in this.

When I saw the Bentley in the Website, yes Lincoln seems to be inspired on the Flying Spur but also definitely the Lincoln looks a lot better to my eyes, it just need a powerful and quiet engine and Cadillac will have problems...

I see the similarities... but who cares?

It is a copycat. In fact, it looks like a Hyundai, it looks so bad.

Bentley looks classy, but this Lincoln looks like a joke.

But then again, we all know the Americans are now desperate to sell, so what can I say.

Copied Bentley? Where? It looks a lot more like a cheap knock-off of an Audi A6. And that is NOT a compliment in any way..

JDM - when did you get out of jail again? We've had several blessed weeks of peace and rational car talk without you.

Jail? What, do you think I am a criminal like yourself? Don't assume everyone is like you, son.

The grill obviously looks similar and the front 3/4 stance looks similar. Other than that body surfaces are very different. Being a concept Lincoln can certainly make a few more alterations between concept and production to differentiate more if they legally have to.
If they legally do not have to do anything so be it.

True. The Europeans simply laugh at this desperate attempt done by the Americans.

But I bet they are laughing even more after realizing that this is nothing more than a Hyundai copycat.

This is basically what happens when a third world country with crappy automobile history tries hard to even compete with the Ultra Mighty Elitist Europeans.

Oh ya, I bet people will go and say "Oh, I want that Lincoln!" when it looks a lot like Hyundai.

What engine will it have anyway? Just like the overpriced Ford GT (Which is actually trying to compete with Lamborghini LOL), V6 Eco-Garbage?

This Lincoln will be basically a poor man's Hyundai Equus. Ya, a "POOR MAN"'s HYUNDAI.

And I'm sure most Americans agree with me. Don't believe? Simply check what the celebrities drive ;) And come back and tell me "Ohh, celebrities are all dumb! They don't know the good cars when they see one! Americans make the best cars, and yet, those dumb celebrities don't understand it!"

Ya, I'm sure people who drive Chevrolet Aveo have a strong passion towards cars LOL!

By the way, the new Cadillac CT6 image is now leaked.

And practically, just as we expected, it looks like a CTS. And apparently this is supposed to compete with mid size cars, not the full size ones.

But I still think the new CT6 looks pretty good, it will do well against Hyundai Equus. I'm pretty sure.

Just saw a few Continental GTC's recently in Palm Springs. Absolutely stunning vehicle.

Truthfully I thought they were taking a 1960s Continental for inspiration and styling it for the 21st century. I can see vague similarities to a Bentley, but not significant ones. It is so cliche for automakers to whine about others copying their designs that I don't care anymore. If there are more good looking cars on the road, then I am happy.

Oh and it looks more like the Jaguar XF than a Bentley, so if anybody should be up in arms, it is not Bentley.

Without reading any of the other comments, I venture to say that the typical site bias here will either say there is no resemblance whatsoever, or that copying design is a natural part of design evolution, and everyone does it. My comment on the first reaction is, hahahahahahahahaha...right...and on the 2nd one, yes, it's ok for Auto designers to do this, except if you are an Asian auto designer. And, God forbid that someone would actually copy the Asian designers!

Maybe Bentley guy is annoyed because the Conti looks more like one of their upcoming concepts and they have to redesign now?
