Porsche Confirms Macan Will Most Likely Overtake Cayenne As Most Popular Model

Porsche said the new Macan compact crossover could pass the larger Cayenne SUV to become the brand's top-selling U.S. model.

The Macan, which debuted in the spring of last year, will have its first full year of availability in 2015.

In the U.S., Porsche's largest market, the crossover could match or surpass levels of the Cayenne, which accounted for a volume of 16,000 units in 2014, Porsche sales chief Bernhard Maier said on Wednesday.

Porsche sold 3,526 Cayennes and 2,600 Macans in the U.S. through March, according to the Automotive News Data Center.

Love the Mecan! I wanted one, but could not get it with diesel. I checked out the Cayenne (with diesel), and loved it except... it sounded like a diesel truck. Yech. I ended up ordering a Q5 diesel. Still, I love that Mecan! I can see why it's so popular.

FYI, even though I ordered a Q5 TDI, and I think it's gorgeous inside and out, I think the Porsche Mecan is a better vehicle. It looks even more beautiful outside and in, purely from a design perspective, and it's also more luxurious. Plus you have that Porsche handling in an SUV/Crossover.

Given that it inherited the Cayenne's price point and the Cayenne has gone up market...well DUHH.

The better move would to have kept the Cayenne at its price point and slot the Macan below that. THAT would have radically increased sales.

The Cayenne isn't an amazing seller.

Model Year 2014 = 16,205 in USA X5 = 47,031 M Class = 46,726

Thus, Porsche played this wrong.

Yes Porsche would also sell more 911 models if they priced them the same as the Mustang. As they would if they priced the Panamera the same as the Impala and the Boxster at the Miata. Somehow Porsche is also one of the most profitable automakers in the world, I think they know what they are doing.
