#NYIAS: If Looks Could Kill, Then Call Us Dead - Nissan's New Maxima Captivates The Big Apple

Rarely are we taken in with a pretty face, but the 2016 Nissan Maxima just might be an exception to the rule.  We aren’t sure if this is a whole new direction for Nissan or simply fall out from collaboration with Mercedes-Benz, but whatever it is we love it.  This redesign is eons better than the outgoing model and everywhere you look the attention to detail is exceptional.  This one will give more than one Infiniti model  a run for the money and we can’t emphasize enough just how good the Maxima is going to sell.

It is THAT good folks and you heard it here first.

But don’t take our word for it look below and pass judgment for yourself.

Is the new Maxima a STUD or a DUD?

It is a new direction and arguably better than the current Infiniti.

No interior shots though, the owner would spend more time looking at this from the inside :)

Article: "Rarely are we taken in with a pretty face..."

I'm seeing just the opposite, but that's just me.

Great looking car - very ballsy and definitely not cookie-cutter. No doubt polarizing but the best designs always are.

This looks like a luxury car, a very good luxury car I mean.

But the Europe worshippers will always simply hate it.

I think Nissan slipped you some cash and made a threat against your family. This thing is not attractive in the least.

This is NOT a good looking car. I'm willing to bet that the trim lines Nissan is showcasing for the auto show are the top of the line. This car will easily cost $40-$45k with only a decent amount of features. I'll save my $40K and put it towards the new A4 next year.

Some people only want a potato with 4 rings on it, or one of a series of various size boxes with kidney grilles...we cannot expect them to recognize creative style or design if it ran over them.

Creative does not equal good looking

jeffgall writes "Creative does not equal good looking"

So true! This demonstrates that creativity, and being different for the sake of different is not in itself a good thing. One can create a thousand ugly creations, and it's all icky.

In *my* opinion, I place have value on someone who creates just one gorgeous car rather than 100 unique and ugly ones.

Wow, Agent009 must be a Nissan fan boy. The spies also loved the new styling of the Murano which is way overstylized and looks even worse in person. I don't think this Maxima is as bad as the new Murano, but too many swoops on the side, and the front grille design is awkward too.

The Maxima is a FRONT WHEEL DRIVE car. That means it is a piece of crap suffering from the moaning CVT and major torque steer. Not fun or safe to drive with its 290hp.
A fancy paint job on a NY show won't help it sell or hide it fatal flaws.

Nissan's CVT is truly TERRIBLE.

4DSC in the taillight....Nissan, you are trying too heard to position this. Let the design (bad as it is) speak for itself.

The starting price for this car is about $34k. That's just $4k lower than a Hyundai Genesis. If anyone took this car over a Genesis, they would be an absolute nimrod.

Well, we expected this given last year's concept... but it's still rubbish.

i think it looks great. 5 Glass tint would suit the DLO well.

Will have to see in person but the front end looks like an even worse version of an Acura beak to me.

CVT = fail... Especially if you call it a 4DSC

No AWD option = fail. All of the competition offers it at this price point and size.

OMG...There's not ONE single solitaire angle of this car that I can look at and say it's acceptable. What a rubbish and tasteless exercise. The Kia/Hyundai guys must be ROFL with such incompetence from another Japanese brand. The Japanese just don't have taste in design period. They're great at Durability/Reliability though.

We shall see, the new Murano is quite promising and this is the sedan version. The current Maxima is fairly stylish for what it and as have been the previous generations. Mostly the car just lost a purpose when Nissan jumbo sized the Altima above it. There are few competitors along the lines of the Maxima and all are 5+ inches longer I believe. I think it would make more sense with an Avalon or Impala type size but it would look more plump then. The V6 Altima, Camry and Accord market is tinier than ever and the Maxima is a nicer version of those at a premium, this bolder styling could work to convince people they need such a car.
