California Comes Under Fire For Green Car Rebates To Only Going To The Rich
California's incentives to purchase electric vehicles are under attack, as data shows most of the money goes to consumers who earn twice the national average yet collect cash rebates on Tesla Motors Inc.'s luxury models.

"It's hard for the average Californian to understand why someone buying a $100,000 car should get a rebate," said California state Senator Ted Gaines, a Republican who has proposed eliminating rebates on cars that cost more than $40,000. "That's the same question I posed to myself, and it was hard to justify."

With almost a fifth of California payments applied to Tesla vehicles priced higher than $71,000, the state's regulators also are drafting rules to ration incentives based on income.

I agree, folks getting the expensive Tesla do not deserve and certainly do not need a rebate.

The better question is why should there be ANY rebate for an EV? Consumers should make vehicular purchases in a free-market environment and accept the consequences. Squandering taxpayer money on car rebates makes not a lick of sense given the economic challenges of the California welfare state.
