#NYIAS: Is The New Maxima Going To Eat Away At Entry Level Infiniti Sales?
NYIAS is open to the public but the impact is still being felt around AutoSpies HQ.  One of the hottest topics of discussion around the water cooler has got to be the new Maxima.  Nissan took us all by surprise by following an excellent reboot of the Murano with an equally superb redesign of the flagship Maxima.

While there are a few traditionalists in the crowd that insist they need to see the new “Max” in person before passing final judgement.  Everyone else is fully on board with the new Nissan bandwagon.

What is the biggest unanswered question?  By far, the staff on hand wants to know who will buy a current Q40 or Q50 when you have a top line Maxima out there for thousands less.

Will The Maxima steal any thunder from Infiniti?

I think it might, as well as a few Lexus ES and Acura TLX sales as well.

Earth to Agent 009. Did you read the comments and look at the votes in your last post on this thing? Eh NO it won't. Both this and Infiniti models may loose sales to the Altima or other brands.

And that is based on what extensive research?

Anyone who likes tacky styling, inside and out, will go for the Maxima. Most folks with true premium tastes would be willing to pay the extra money.

But time will tell to see if Nissan's risk will pay off. Unlike Acura's 4G TL, the Maxima's styling may be more accepted in a non-premium offering.

Infiniti is RWD and AWD...Nissan is FWD. If people do not care about that, well then maybe.

This Maxima looks like a supercar.

Looks... Yes. Actual offering.. No. Sorry but they lost any real enthusiast with CVT and FWD. Torque steer is for rice racers.

infiniti q50 lease for 350=400 per month, maximas go for the same. i think most will still prefer the infiniti.

I just got an email from my local Infiniti dealer offering $0 down, $279/month for a Q50!!

Maxima is a cheaply made front wheel/torque steer car that suffers from moaning CVT. Maxima is competing with the cheap cars. Infinity is a quality build. competing with higher end cars.

It's a shame too... It's almost there.

Both Infinity and Nissan have one of the lowest reliability scores for this year and last year.

Once a Datsun, always a Datsun.

This will definitely eat into the Infiniti Q50 sales. The Q50 is deadly dull and this may be controversial in its styling, but you will get noticed. If the Optima SXL get cross shopped with the Lexus ES, this definitely will. Nissan should have made this an Infiniti.

Quite possibly the most horrendous C pillar in auto industry. Also, the front fender under A pillar is painful to look at

It won't. The same question was posed when the 2004 Maxima blew everyone away, however the G (Q50's predecessor) held sway. I owned the 2005 Max, then I upgraded 18 months later and bought a 2006 M35 and I learned the difference pronto. 10 years later those in the know understand the interior appointments, RWD vs. FWD, CVT, I could go on, etc. are no match for the Infiniti. I know the German fanboys think they're just gussied up Nissan's but like I said before that ship sailed a while ago. I had to rent a Maxima last month and after owning then leasing the last 2 M-Series (now the Q70) since 2006, I felt like I was de-boosted 10 levels.

Oh but it looks nice, so it will sell just at the expense of some other midsized V6 mainstream or near luxury sedan.
