Which Is Best? Cadillac Moving To German Like Performance - Lincoln Sides With Japanese On Cocoon Like Luxury
Ford Motor Co. and General Motors added a chapter in their bitter, crosstown rivalry at the New York auto show last week, this time in the full-size luxury sedan segment that they owned decades ago but barely register in today.

Now, both companies think they finally have the car -- a revived Lincoln Continental for Ford and GM's Cadillac CT6 -- to rekindle past glory and pave the way toward a lucrative future in China.

While the Continental and CT6 battled to make the bigger splash at the auto show, their head-to-head matchup likely won't have the same intensity out in the marketplace. Despite having similar goals, the two cars embody the divergent directions that Lincoln and Cadillac are taking to land on more shopping lists.

Although I like both cars, I give Lincoln credit for being more daring. I hope they build it.

Cadillac seems to have gone after an S class whereas Lincoln's inspiration came from itself

Re Subject: "Cadillac Moving To German Like Performance..."

Previous AutoSpies articles have alleged that Cadillac has already accomplished that, besting BMW's 5-series at The Ring. It appears to me that even though Caddy attains similar numbers as the Germans, it doesn't have the desirability, public mind-share, or curb presence that a BMW or Mercedes does. Ditto with comparisons to Lexus. Ditto with Lincoln.

Cadillac still seems to me like a brand that's struggling to reclaim its former glory. Does anyone ever say "It's the Cadillac of {motorcycles | yachts | computers | airplanes | personal watercraft | watches | etc.}" to signify it's the best of the best? Nope. They might use "Rolls Royce" or "Mercedes" in that figure of speech.

The market has proven that there's room for both approaches. Between BMW, Mercedes, and Lexus, there seems to be a pretty even mix of performance and luxury.

With that said, Cadillac and Lincoln both need to focus on making their brands as prestigious as those mentioned above. They obviously still need to focus on executing remarkable cars to back up a prestigious reputation, but their marketing campaigns need to stress why the public should want to OWN a Cadillac or Lincoln, and not necessarily why they would want to DRIVE one. If I want sporty, I should want to own and be seen in a Cadillac vs a BMW or Lexus. If I want luxury, I should want to own and be seen in Lincoln vs a Mercedes.

I'd go with the Continental because it'll be the choice of people rich and powerful enough to be driven around who aren't driving a German lux sedan or XTS.

Neither...both of these should be pure American heritage...big, powerful, over the top interiors, luxury ride and beautiful exteriors. The road less traveled would bring attention to the differences and generate sales. BMW's, Mercedes, Audi and Lexus have established their turf and are becoming somewhat generic and boring. Lincoln and Caddy need the confidence and conviction to be American luxury.

I agree with NEITHER is best. They are NOT the same thing.
If you want a performance car - that is what you should buy
If you want a Luxury car - that is what you should buy
If you want both - buy two cars.

The CT6 and the Continental do not compete for the same buyer.
The real problem is that BUICK competes in the LUXURY car market at the low end - and ultimately the price of the Lincoln will determine how it sells.

However - people do not purchase FULL SIZE performance cars in Large numbers anymore.

I agree by in large with what has already been said. The big issue is re-establishing old history. Back in the 40's and 50's Cadillac and Lincoln epitomized high end luxury on a level with Bentley and Rolls Royce. Unfortunately GM and Lincoln allowed their cars to languish in the 70's, 80's, 90's etc. while Mercedes, BMW, Audi allowed to gain
a real foothold globally. Not only did they offer as much luxury but they also handled pretty good. Also they supplanted in the back of peoples minds a branding that you have with "Kleenex" for tissues and
"Zerox" for copy machines. So it's more about the challenge of Lincoln and Cadillac getting back that branding that they lost to the Europeans and Japanese. Cadillac's approach is to make a European BMW style driving car. Lincolns approach is to compete more with Lexus with a soft quiet ride and lots of luxury features. Frankly, in my opinion, that is the better approach. First of all people who buy a big S class are more interested in ride, quietness, quality and luxury features then outright handling.

They both are basically just wannabes. Cadillac wants to be a German, but can't, and Lincoln wants to be a Bentley and Lexus, and fails to be either.

In the end, Cadillac and Lincoln both compete with Hyundai and Kia. Cadillac CT6 will do well against Hyundai Equus, and Lincoln will do good against Kia's flagship (whatever it is called).

Detroit shouldn't even dream to think about competing with the Japanese, let alone the super mighty Europeans. And I'm sure many Americans would agree with me.

Lincoln nailed. Cadillac is adrift because de Nysschen is an idiot.

After thinking more - I believe that Lincoln has decided not to try to compete with the Germans - and instead it will compete with Lexus - and it does have a chance there - with Lexus having changed to that "grill". And the Lincoln is likely to be seen well in China too.

Cadillac has indeed targeted the Germans - BUT - in reality - they cannot expect major sales in Europe so I do not know why they did. Cadillac will never be looked upon as a real option in Germany and most of Western Europe. And in China - the smaller size of the Cadillacs HURTS them. In the USA - they are abandoning their traditional buyer (Who are buying the escalade) - so Lincoln can pick up those cast offs. Cadillac MIGHT compete with the germans here in the USA - but it is still a lot of competition. So = what Cadillac did does not make sense.
They don't exude pure Luxury - because that implies "space" - and the cars do not have that.

The interior dashboard architecture of all Cadillac's including the CT6 are simply not up to the standard of Audi, Mercedes, and BMW. Im gathering that Cadillac is there in terms of ride and handling. Interior quality needs to move up a few notches before it can compete with the big German Three.
