CAR WARS! Sibling Rivalry — Would YOU Rather Have A Porsche 911 Or The All-New Boxster Spyder?

CAR WARS! Sibling Rivalry — Would YOU Rather Have A Porsche 911 Or The All-New Boxster Spyder?
You have to give it to Porsche. The company definitely knows how to play with a car enthusiast's heart. One way this is happening is with the latest and greatest Boxster and Caymans.

The thing is, with every all-new iteration or variant, the Boxster and Cayman models become even more appealing. They also increase in price. At the 2015 New York Auto Show, the German automaker unveiled another version dubbed the Boxster Spyder.

New York Auto Show

Much like the all-new Cayman GT4, the Boxster Spyder is as hardcore as it gets. It features a more paired down interior and more power than before. Of course for all of this goodness, you will have to dole out some coin. To be precise, it starts at just over $82,000.

As the last Boxster I drove, the GTS, had an as-tested price over $100,000, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Spyder — with options — easily crest that mark.

Here's the dilemma: The base 911 starts at just over $84,000. There's no question that the 911 is an icon and, in addition, we're likely to believe that no one will look at you, palms facing the sky, asking "So, you couldn't afford a 911?"

So, I have to ask: IF presented with the opportunity to pick up an all-new Boxster Spyder or a base 911, WHICH would you choose and WHY?

I'd actually go with a conventional Cayman. It's what the 911 should be.

There is no way in hell I'd get the Boxster Spyder. With the top up, the Boxster Spyder is ugly beyond belief and let's face it, convertibles live with their tops up more than down so you're stuck driving an automotive atrocity.

The Cayman and 911 are far more attractive and the Cayman is a better drive than the 911.

Here is the thing in terms of straight line performance a Cayman GTS is virtually dead even if slightly ahead of a base 911 Carrera in straight line acceleration whether it be a 6 speed or PDK. Yet the GTS has that mid engine handling advantage over a base 911. A Cayman GT4 is right up against a 911 Carrera S in straight-line performance and will probably out handle it. Both Cayman models are significantly less the their 911 variants in price. It is very hard to recommend the 911 over the Cayman when you compare performance and handling. So the 911 has to offer some other rewards to want to spend the extra 20 or 30 K for it. Visually in my eyes the 911 is prettier than the Cayman. It offers more cruising comfort. It has 2 rear jump seats to carry kids in a pinch. It offers more Cache than a Cayman does. So for wealthy middle class person who wants a real sports car and does not frequent the track the 911 has to be the ticket. Value per pound the Cayman is the better buy. I guess this would apply to a Boxster Spyder versus a 911 Cabrio as well.
