Land Rover Discovery Sport vs Audi Q5 vs Jeep Cherokee vs Range Rover Evoque - Who Makes The Most Capable All Around Crossover?

Its so dark in Norfolk at half past six on a January morning that I very nearly plough straight into the River Born trying to park. On the one hand I’m in the new Discovery Sport, so there’s a good chance it wouldn’t have noticed, Land Rover’s off-road tech being what it is. On the other, this isn’t exactly the kind of test we had in mind for the new Land Rover’s first foray into the ultra-competitive mid-size SUV mêlée – Mark Walton has already driven it up an Icelandic glacier for CAR, after all.

I agree with their findings, except with the "Jeep is nowhere" line. Jeep excels at rock-climbing and other ruggedness. Rubicon territory. I love the Q5's beauty (doesn't look at all like a truck), car-like handling, face-stretching acceleration (3.0 TDI with 428 ft-lbs of torque), fuel economy (37+ MPG highway, real world), and luxury. I'm waiting for delivery in about a month and a half. But a serious off-roader, it is not, in spite of Quattro AWD.

Its cool you ordered a Q5. But it seems like in every post you make, you keep pointing it out. How many times is enough for you ? Say something different.

Steve - what car do you have on order? I missed it in the other 20 posts.

Lay off him guys, it takes courage to admit you actually ordered a Q5 without being forced to by a female counterpart, sacrificing ones manhood like that is not easy

Nice to see Land Rover's resurgence continue with the new Discovery. In the end it may not be the absolute best but then again you won't see yourself coming and going every time you drive it either and it is competitive.

Wow I was going to post a serious comment with regards to this article... prior to reading it. I was going to mention the Macan and how it is basically going to eat Land Rover's lunch every day etc. But then I read the article and it's.. just.. so juvenile and "yay England!" that I kind of want my 5 minutes back. What the hell is a Jeep Cherokee doing in this conversation anyway?

That's the British automotive press for you. And yeah, seems to me they should have had the Grand Cherokee in there instead of the garden variety Cherokee.

That is a bit ridiculous, the Macan starts at 20k more in the US and is aimed at a different audience. I have no desire for a street rod SUV, I will save that for a Cayman or 911 or an M4 or a Corvette etc... For an SUV I want one that is capable off road when I want it to be but still drives nice on the road, looks nice and has some practicality which the Discovery Sport seems to have. While I admire the Macan, the Range Rover Sport SVT, X5 M etc... personally would never buy one. What you buy depends on your priorities.
