Volkswagen Advisory Council Backs Winterkorn In Opposition To Chairman

Volkswagen AG's top supervisory board group backed CEO Martin Winterkorn, defusing a power struggle with Chairman Ferdinand Piech.

The leadership committee of the German automaker's supervisory board said Winterkorn, 67, was the "best possible" chief executive and had the group's "full support," the six-member body said today in a statement.

The committee, which comprises Piech and five other members, plans to propose to the full board in February that Winterkorn's contract be extended beyond 2016.

Piech is an anathema to progress and he must be bullwhipped. Piech needs to burn in hell.

I think Piech is a decent engineer that has done reasonably well to shape VW. The problem is he was never able to instill the kind of reliability needed to compete in world markets well enough. Further his entire career he was known for undermining other auto executives in order to further promote himself. Well he obviously went too far this time. Why he pushed for a new Phaeton boggles the brain. That is the last thing VW needs. VW is the "peoples car". If they want luxury that what they have Audi, Porsche etc. for.
