62 Million Recalled Vehicles Later Who Should We Blame For The Explosion In Safety Issues?

As The New York Times reported in early February this year, automobile recalls have reached record levels. In 2014, more than 62 million vehicles were recalled — a higher total than the previous three years combined.

It would be nice if I could tell you that it’s not really a big deal. If I could tell you there’s been no loss of life or that the recalls were for trivial things like your kid’s college decal just will not adhere to the rear window. But some of the defects have cost lives. And in some cases, the automakers knew there was danger before the cars were ever released for sale.

009, There you go again. Who judges them to be "immoral"? You don't live in a risk free world. For example, if you live in the UK and are a woman who gets breast cancer, the National Health Services will not pay for the best proven cancer treatments used in the USA so you are more likely to die. Likewise, if you are over 73 years old with a heart condition where an ICD could save you life, the NHS (government run) won't pay for it. How about state DOT's that wait until several people have been killed before putting up a traffic signal in an intersection that drivers know is risky. Are they all immoral making an economic decision that means some people will die? It is not like companies sit around and say lets cut costs and so what if people die. They make judgement calls, and some people's judgement is not good. Truth be told, the marketplace will not pay the extra cost to take the risk out of products. Ford offered seat belts in the 1950's and GM offered airbags in the 1970's as extra cost options. Both failed in the marketplace. People won't pay for a $25000 entry level vehicle that has no risk; they will buy one for $15,000. that may have a risk. Everything in life has risk.
