Toyota Stands Up To Fuel Cell Critics By Releasing Video Titled “Fueled by Bullsh*t

Toyota has a message for critics who call bullsh*t on hydrogen fuel cells: You’re right -- in one sense.

Tongue planted firmly in cheek, Toyota launched a new campaign today showing how cow pies are a viable source of renewable energy.

The catch phrase: “We’re driving down the road, running on bullsh*t,” uttered by a dairy farmer as he wheeled the Toyota Mirai hydrogen fuel cell vehicle. It’s the first of Toyota’s multipart “Fueled by Everything” video series that looks to educate the public about the various renewable energy sources that hydrogen fuel can be created from.

Toyota has put their bets on hydrogen as "the fuel of the future." However, they're trying to get us to buy into it now!

Never mind that we don't have a clue how to cheaply and cleanly convert available hydrogen into a form that's usable as fuel.

Never mind that today's methods for converting hydrogen into usable fuel use so much electricity, that it makes far better sense just to use the electricity directly in plug-in EVs and other electric transport (trams, busses, and trains) rather than trade off a huge amount of electrical energy for a relatively smaller amount of energy delivered by the hydrogen fuel we create.

Never mind that we don't have a national hydrogen fuel transportation network.

Never mind that we don't have a national hydrogen fuel distribution network.

Never mind that we don't have a safe way of storing and moving hydrogen fuel in high-density urban and suburban environments.

Toyota thinks we should jump on the hydrogen bandwagon now. *I* think let the research continue, as someday, hydrogen as a fuel might be viable. That day isn't today.

Hey Steve,
they are planning on selling like 2000 in the first year. This car is the research...it is continuing. Toyota isn't advocating this as a high volume car to take over tomorrow. This is simply the first step. What kind of idiot thinks that we should have a national hydrogen fuel network ready before we sell the first car? Who is going to pay for it? You? It makes sense to slowly roll out small numbers in specific markets and make adjustments once they have been on the road. Was there a national road network ready for cars when they were first sold? nope...get a clue.

Toyota certainly doesn't want you to buy one.

If a Tesla's electricity comes from a coal powerplant, what's the point other than "feel good" smugness?

With aluminum batteries on the way, Tesla's gigafactory is poised to be a huge money pit if it ever gets up and going.
