DRIVEN: BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer Gets Run Through The Paces - Is There Room For A Premium Mini Van?

BMW is an expert at exploiting new niches. And it reckons there’s a gap in the market for a premium seven-seat mid-sized MPV which its new 2 Series Gran Tourer can be the first to fill. Until now, badge snobs with more than three kids had little option but to get a hulking SUV or van-based people mover... Or suck it up and move downmarket.

Aimed at people who think a Ford Grand C-MAX, Citroen Grand C4 Picasso or even a Volkswagen Touran is too mainstream, the 2 GT promises to be a car they not only need but one they actively desire. BMW style, quality and drivability combined with the practicality and versatility never before offered by the premium brand – and all for a sniff under £25,000.

BMW should definitely sell this in the US. Or else they should make it as a Mini with the same excellent packaging. Maybe "Mini" should be BMW's premium family car division and BMW should be the luxury/performance division.

Either Mini or BMW would sell a ton of these.

Looks great, although it isn't a "real" minivan in size or in having the very useful rear door sliders. I would definitely consider replacing my wife's Mazda5 with this. But not my Sienna SE...I want Audi to build a full size replacement for that!

Well, it's no Chrysler Town & Country, but it looks decent nonetheless.
