GM Death Tally Closing In On Triple Digits After Original Counts Only Estimated A Handful Of Fatalities

General Motors Co.’s ignition switch compensation fund on Monday said it has approved three additional death claims linked to its delayed recall of 2.6 million cars, raising the latest total to 90 deaths.

The fund approved six new injury claims. Of the 163 injury claims approved, 11 are for serious injuries and 152 are for less severe injuries.

GM initially said last year that 13 deaths were related to Chevrolet Cobalts, Saturn Ions and other cars with ignition switches that can inadvertently shut off the engine and disable power steering and air bags. GM delayed recalling the cars for nearly a decade after some within the company became aware there was a problem.

The fund is using a much broader definition to determine if deaths are related to the defect — including pedestrians who may have been killed as a result of a defective GM car.

Definitely the kind of company I'd like to support through my tax dollars propping them up and via my purchases of their excellent products.

There are OVER 12,000 auto deaths each year due to excessive speed
There were over 3200 deaths due to driving distractions(Cell Phone use - eating, texting etc)
In 2012 - over 420,000 people were killed or injured in accidents that involved a distracted Driver.

We have the technology TODAY to restrict speed of a car on major highways - and we could also block use of a phone in a car as well. But - no Car Magazine has come out in favor of hard limiting the speed of cars electronically - most want higher power and faster speeds. So - then WHY critisize GM - when you could prevent MORE deaths in other ways?

And - while GM may have paid off in crashes where a death occurred - this is only proof that these accidents are ones that they prefer not to go to court with. It fails to show other factors that might have also contributed to the death.
