It's just too hard to resist.

The Lexus hybrid models cost more than the diesels to the manufacturer AND the consumer. Diesels are just a more reality-minded choice; hybrids seem more like a fad to me. People pose next to their Priuses and RX400hs in Hollywood (and my town) and say "I'm saving the world!"

Modern diesels are FUN TO DRIVE. Everytime I am in Europe, I always try to go for a diesel because they're so much fun. Gobs of torque at the lower end and neck-snapping throwbacks on the bigger engined diesels. Now that's fun.

lets see diesel engines might be good for sales because:
are more fuel effecient (HUGE selling point in todays market)
require less maintnece (lowers warrenty costs for manufacturer and true ownership cost for customer)
last 2-3 times longer then gas engine.(has better resale)
are just as quiet and indestiguisable from gas engine(not loud and smelly like preivious versions)
have extreme low end torque for better power off the line.

better engines make better cars and yeild better sales.
people are just overly biased about diesels because of the early models. but look how far they have come with gas emmissions, and power. and hybrid owners are always quick to defend their life saving trophy on wheels. like the car is gonna cure cancer or something.

Small clarification, Will:
"CO2 destroys the O3 in the stratosphere" was the sarcastic part. I thought the subject was the ozone layer, global warming was not part of the discussion. Speaking of the latter, it has been happening for a long time, Europe used to be covered in ice all the way down to today's northern Italy until just a few thousand years ago ... damn' romans with their big-engined chariots, they must have started all of this global warming thing!

And on another note, chill out, dude, this is just a forum about cars.

Bigslick, while I share your enthusiasm for diesels, they sound better than they really are (I have a 2.0 tdi that I drive when I'm in Europe):
- nice torque but it only comes once the turbo spools up (at least on my rather small 2.0 engine). There's not much torque in the very low rpm and I found I had to keep it in first gear longer than any other car, quite annoying;
- it's still loud, not so much at cruising speed but at idle you can definitely tell it's a diesel;
- it stinks. It puts out a lot of particulate matter, you should see what an italian freeway or city looks like on a day without wind (most cars are diesels there these days);
- the mileage is freakin' awesome. I averaged about 41 mpg in a fairly large sedan (passat) with 5 people in it over 7000 miles (90% freeway).

The bottom line is, other then maybe those with bluetec, I don't think they're ready for the american levels of traffic. The air stinks bad enough here without them around. Hopefully the new E-class CDI will change that.

Will,
I do believe in global warming, I have seen it in my lifetime. I have just never seen any math detailing how much more CO2 can be found in the atmosphere now vs. say 50 years ago and how much of it could have been caused by cars.
On the other hand I also strongly believe in the markets. I believe the market is the only force capable to remedy a problem such as this (assuming the cause is the cars). To that end, I'll get myself a Tesla roadster as soon as they mature and prove themselves to be viable automobiles.

the truth is this is all bullshit.
co2 levels have risin and fallen at unexplained rates since before man. thats it. the earths natural co2 emmisions is 5-6 times that of what we do with cars and factories and jets combined. so quit waisting your breath and your movie money on anything by al gore you pansy. your just mad because you fail to realize that you got ripped off on your over priced hybrid and people laugh at you when you walk away. and a team of jappanesse scientest using supercomputers estimate that the ozone will completly reform itself(as it has done in the past) by the year 2013 with or w/o hybrids. these idiots give the same reasoning for global warming as they did for the ice age that was supposed to happen back in the late 70's.
