BBC Cleans House On Top Gear - Will These New Hosts Usher In New Era Or Begin A Death Spiral?

James May, Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond are out at the BBC’s “Top Gear.” It looks like the trio will be replaced by “Life on Mars” actor Philip Glenister, Jodie Kidd from “Classic Car Show” and racer and TV personality Guy Martin.

The U.K.’s Sunday Express is reporting that BBC2, the channel on which “Top Gear” airs, is looking to close the deal quickly after the loss of the current presenters.

The show’s co-creator, Andy Wilman, also quit. He was overheard talking about the new lineup with noted car guy Jay Kay and his band Jamiroquai.

Martin is a motorcycle racer, tinkerer and the son of a truck mechanic. According to his bio, “if it’s not a challenge to life, limb and sanity, then he’s just not interested.” He also might be the only TT rider to set a lap record with an engine built and tuned himself.

The show will die a miserable death.

It will probably go back to being a small regional British show. The former crew epitomized the Walter Mitty fantasy of the middle age man with expanding waistline. They were not "professional" drivers. Further they had a fantastic chemistry. In order for these new 3 to make it they are gong to have to come up with some hook to keep audiences enthralled. Unfortunately I think it will be too much like 5th Gear. That show fell on it's face and so will this new one.

The might as well just have Tanner, Rutledge, and Adam from US Top Gear do it - the UK Top Gear will likely no longer be a show with international appeal.
