2025 CAFE Standards At Risk Because No One Is Buying Fuel Efficient Vehicles Any More

The dogs aren’t eating the dog food” is a “Mad Men-era saying that sums up the frustration marketers feel when consumers do not behave as expected.

California may be drying up and calling for another 40% reduction in greenhouse gases by 2030, but thanks to low gas prices, consumers are buying cars like it’s 1999, shunning fuel-efficient small cars and hybrid-electric vehicles for SUVs, CUVs and old-school muscle cars.

That exasperation was clear at the recent SAE World Congress, where powertrain engineers worried major technical advances in fuel economy and emissions would be nullified by lack of consumer interest in HEVs and other green vehicles, making it impossible to hit the U.S. government’s unadjusted CAFE goal of 54.5 mpg (4.3L/100 km) by 2025.

NO! It's not at risk because "no one is buying fuel efficient vehicles." It's at risk because politicians are myopic. Today, while gas prices are temporarily low, hoards of consumers have abandoned fuel-efficient vehicles in favor of bigger, more powerful, less efficient ones. In a couple of years when gas prices return to their former highs and go even higher, American car makers will be crying that foreign makers (those are the guys making fuel-efficient vehicles even without CAFE) have an unfair advantage. We've followed the regulations (AKA doing the minimum required by law), so we need protection!

If politicians had balls (and a backbone), they'd pass the CAFE laws even though we don't need them now, in May 2015. They'd do it because they'd know it would be good for North American automakers' future, when gas prices are high again. Oh, and it's also good for people who will be breathing a little less pollution.

Also, regardless if CAFE passes or not, we can lay the blame at the feet of US automakers. Use your brains! Have you never seen a made-in-the-Middle-East "energy crisis" (AKA gas supply shortage)? Do you think it'll never happen again? Do you think gas prices will always stay low, or they'll trend downwards? Can you not anticipate a North America in which gas prices go back up to ugly level in the not-too-distant future? Your thoughts about the future are what motivate you to design and create cars, starting today, to meet those future needs. If you choose to make only or primarily gas-guzzling cars, then please don't blame anyone but yourselves when you end up repeating what has happened time and time again: gas prices go up, and those fickle consumers flock to foreign automakers' showrooms where there are a variety of nice, fuel-efficient vehicles.

US automakers take note: You've been caught with your pants down a number of times on this very same issue! You may want to rethink things before you set yourself up for yet another repeat performance.

Lower tailpipe emissions are better for our air, so it's a shame the "global warming" brainwashers had to enter the fray and attempt to dramatically distort the mindset of those "in charge" of progressively modernizing these standards. Now Californians are stuck with YET ANOTHER self-inflicted economic meltdown looming.
