Driven Jaguar XE: Has The Big Cat Finally Beat The 3-Series At It's Own Game?
It has taken Jaguar quite some time to arrive at this point. The mid-size premium sedan segment has proven to be highly profitable, just ask BMW. Its 3 Series has set the benchmark for years. In fact, it literally defined BMW for countless loyal buyers since the day it premiered back in 1975. And over the years, competitors have worked tirelessly to keep up. Without a doubt, cars like the Mercedes C-Class and Audi A4 are excellent, but many still believe the 3 Series remains king. But now there’s a new player in town, and it comes from Jaguar.

Let's accept the improbably assumption that dynamically it's better than the 3 Series, why then is it a styling dud?

I am having a long lingering love affair (as do all who really know them) with my VW Phaeton, but one of the very few cars I just might like as much (or at least would like to try out) is the XJ. This is a lovely daring avantgarde design with a luscious interior. But apparently it does not sell many. Sad. Well, I sat in an XE at Geneva and it will not change that picture one iota. It was cramped and had a loathsomely retro plain interior. Retro as in some Korean car of the 90s, not as in Jaguar. What is this crap fashion for simply 'leather and aluminium' these days? Same in the new Range Rovers. Hardly a trace of real fine wood in sight in the interior, even when you spec one up online. People tell me it is no longer 'in fashion', but the unique selling proposition of any Jag is the feeling of cosseted high luxury, in a similar vein to a Bentley or a Rolls, and apparently neither this nor the new XF, cut the mustard. Still cramped. 'Sporty' killed the wonderful last ever Rover 75, a minor cruising miracle in the true vein of historic Rovers, killed off by an impatient BMW owner. What a pity here that 'sporty' is now destroying the ethos of a fabulous marque in front of our disbelieving eyes. A stripped out cheap nasty interior in an otherwise nicely technical car with a reasonable (if not daring enough) exterior. Oh dear. How sad. Mr Tata took over and made a big success of JLR but seems to have missed the ball when it comes to nice luxy, liveable interiors, arguably the most important feature of any car.

It is not that bad the front and lateral view , very ugly and simple rear view with cheap tail lights, interior nothing special and boring , no more details need it I stay quite in BMW family as always. They wait until 2015 to make a 3 series competition , I hope they can do something better in and out.

You guys must really love your BMWs. I mean, the 3 is hardly a pretty car but it is a 3 and that's its selling point. I think this Jag looks very good.

The constant comparison on this site of new vehicles to the BMW 3 series, like it is some sort of standard bearer, is ludicrous. It's getting really old and boring...and predictable.
