STUD or DUD: Do BRIGHT Colors Work On The Porsche 911 (991)?

STUD or DUD: Do BRIGHT Colors Work On The Porsche 911 (991)?
As usual, Agent 001 and I were talking cars. We were both sharing our love for the all-new Porsche 911 (991). Of all the great 911s that have gone to market, it's pretty hard to argue that the 991 generation product is not the best.

It's the most spacious, features fantastic technology — for performance and in the cockpit — and it's outrageously fast. 001 loves the 991 so much he snapped one up for himself. Though I don't have one in my garage I will say in my experience there's no question that this is the ultimate 911 across any measurable benchmark.

But, as we've seen with other autos, with the good must come the bad. And in this case, it's an interesting point. As more 911 buyers get a bit more unique with their taste and color combinations, we've begun seeing some pretty wildly spec'd cars. The bright and zany colors Porsche is known for are starting to come out and play.

There's just one problem. We're not sure if these staggering colors WORK on the 991-bodied 911.

We can't quite put our finger on it, so, we wanted to address you, the Spies, for your tasteful opinion. That said, we want to know: do BRIGHT colors work on the Porsche 911 (991)?

I think bright colors *can* work on a 911, though I don't feel this specific example does particularly well.

If I can add to to the discussion, part of our conversation revolved around how cool the weirder colors worked so well on the 993 generation. The Riviera and Mexico Blue http://flatsixes.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/seinfeld-porsche-993-turbo-s.jpg http://i.pbase.com/g4/57/440357/2/60893887.BlueTurquoise993andRivieraBlueC2S.jpg, Speed Yellow (look up to see who owns that URL)...even Rubystone Red (Fuchsia) was cool. But on this 991 gen, the only colors that seem to works are Silver, Black and medium greys. The only thing I can attribute it to is that the 991 is a much bigger car.

Yet, The Camaro and Challenger are HUGE in comparison and I would want any of those NOT in a bright, over the top color. Perplexes me.

Meant to say I wouldn't want Challenger or Camaro in anything BUT a bright color even though they are much larger than the 911.

Being a black on black guy for the last 21 years, this is a difficult question but...

If I look at my fellow Rennlisters, those with Mexico Blue, Blood Orange, Speed Yellow or other 'quasi-traditional' colors have very, very sweet rides.

Those colors aren.t for me but that is true for any car, not just 991's.

So, 00R, 001, I'd say the wilder shades of 991's are 'in' from my vantage point and especially so with the 3's and RS's...

Most people are afraid of color. And, because of this tend to stay away from non-colors, like black and white, or neutrals like silver shades. The only exception outside of this is the occasional red or bright blue that always seem to be around. Choosing bright colors takes more than just liking the color though...it takes having to live with it. This happens all the time in your house for example...one of the most common mistakes people make is choosing bright colors they think they like for their home. They love it after it is all painted...but within three months, they grow tired of it. It is hard to live with on a daily basis. This is why bright colors are a fad that come and go, and are produced in very low numbers.

You may be right but as a counterpoint, my houses have been painted with bright, deep and intense colors for the past 20 years, the same timeframe where black has dominated my choice for cars...

I don't think I'm an exception.

Its not about whether the color works. It is ONLY about the vain, narcissist owner gets enough attention.

Colors that would be vomit inducing on other cars work on a 911.

That is an awesome comment! Totally agree. Lambo falls in same category.

Of course when I look at "Green" I'm thinking GT3 color. I think that works.

@ Atrain...you would be more the exception than the rule then when it comes to house color. Also, when you go to sell, you will find that you have narrowed down the number of buyers who would be willing to buy your house. You might have a few who can see past the color and focus on the bones of the property...but don't be surprised if they ask for a painting allowance. ;-)
