Almost 10% Of Self Driving Cars Issued Permits In California Have Already Been In Accidents
Four of the nearly 50 self-driving cars now rolling around California have gotten into accidents since September, when the state began issuing permits for companies to test them on public roads.

Two accidents happened while the cars were in control; in the other two, the person who still must be behind the wheel was driving, a person familiar with the accident reports told The Associated Press.

Three involved Lexus SUVs that Google Inc. outfitted with sensors and computing power in its aggressive effort to develop “autonomous driving,” a goal the tech giant shares with traditional automakers. The parts supplier Delphi Automotive had the other accident with one of its two test vehicles.

Google and Delphi said their cars were not at fault in any accidents, which the companies said were minor.

Sounds like a sensationalist headline which does not accurately reflect the body of the story.

The point of the matter is that self driving cars are not going to be accident free in any regard.

At this point in time they can not make intuitive decisions based from other drivers behavior, they can't make ethical choices (run over the kid laying in the street or the cardboard box next to him), nor are they error free.

Are they safe than the average driver? On a long stretch of road with no obstacles maybe, in traffic with pedestrians... I doubt it.

As Albert Einstein once said : “Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity.”
And he was not certain about the universe!
But what is much more widespread than the actual stupidity is the playing stupid, turning off your ear, not listening, not seeing.
And I would add not driving.
The stupid New York Times actually published an article in 04/06/2015 about “Planes without Pilots”, after the German Airline crash, as if questioning if a Pilot belongs in the cockpit. Just avoid suicidal pilots.
Cars without drivers is both stupid and playing stupid.
