F1 Promotors Demand Return Of 1000 HP V6 Engines In 2017
Formula 1 race promoters have written to the FIA calling for an 'urgent' change to the sport's engine rules, Motorsport.com can reveal.

As teams continue discussions on Thursday at a Strategy Group meeting about potentially introducing 1000bhp engines for 2017, a direct request has been sent to motor racing's governing body for it to back a rules overhaul.

Ron Walker, the former Australian Grand Prix CEO and head of the Formula One Promoters' Association (FOPA), says that he has directly requested the FIA acts because he thinks fans do not like the current power units.

I think it is a good idea except they need to free up the developers and engineers to innovate. To promote innovation just limit gas supply for each race, let them come up with alternative solutions to augment these targets via different fuels, electric motors, air power whatever. Basically let F1 do it's magic and see what innovative ways they can come up with to meet those goals. The super rigid rules these days make for a boring sport. I would also do away with wings but allow fender spats (gotta have advertising space:).

If you want to see a bunch of cars with nearly identical specs battle it out, go to a NASCAR event. My understanding of F1's appeal is that part of it comes from having enough flexibility in the rules as to allow for big innovation. For example, limit your engine to 3 liters of internal combustion, but allow each entry to choose how many cylinders, engine configuration (V, inline, boxer, W, etc.) and let them figure out how to get the best power out of it without an arbitrary horsepower limit.

That way, some entrants might opt for more horsepower, some for a more usable torque curve, some for lower weight, some for better traction. That diversity is part of F1's appeal. Uniformity is more of a NASCAR thing.

(No offense intended to F1 or NASCAR fans)

Agree 100% with TheSteve, one last thing I would add though is they should have tires that don't shed and leave marbles of rubber everywhere except the optimal racing line. These days by the time the race is 1/2 way over it is impossible to pass except through others mistakes or pit stop strategy.

The funny thing is how the FIA seems to think that everything with F1 needs to be changed except the astronomical ticket prices to watch two cars "race" each other for two hours. "Equalizing" the teams or making it a "spec" racing series is not the answer.

Lower event ticket prices, create a reasonably priced online streaming service to view races, sell race week viewing packages, get BMW back into the sport, share more revenue with established smaller teams than give it: Ferrari, McLaren, and Red Bull(Williams still needs help);

Also, strengthen the mid pack runners: Lotus, Force India, TR, Sauber. F1 was best when even though the mid-pack teams did not stand a real chance of winning, they somehow pulled off the upset.

Also make the drivers available on Thursday, along with "open" pits. Lastly, MORE TEST DAYS!
