2016 Base Camaro To Start With Only 270 HP - Are They Already Running Behind Coming Out Of The Gate?

Well, the cat’s out of the bag with the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro. At least from the pics we’ve seen so far, the looks are surprisingly subtle, but where does it stand in terms of performance? According to a reliable inside source, the new Camaro gets a new and more powerful V8, a revised V6 and for the first time ever, a turbocharged four-cylinder.

Our tipster tells us the new, lighter, Alpha platform Camaro gets the following engine options:

·A 2.0-liter turbo four as the base engine with 270 horsepower and 290 lb-ft of torque

·A 3.6-liter V6 with 330 HP and 275 lb-ft of torque as an option up from that

·Or the SS with a 6.2-liter LT1 V8 with 440 HP and 450 lb-ft of torque

To me, this is actually a smart move to capture more market share and also possibly nab buyers that may looking to get into a hot hatch. Those low-end conquests will be critical, mark my words.

Completely agree. Lets face it, this is not 1969 where cubes and bhp are synonymous. 270 from a turbo 4 is what the 21st Century is about, so this car will get decent mileage and the punch of 270hp. The V6 & high output V8's will all be on the menu in a lighter more efficient, more strong, package. Nice work.

Certainly gives a better sense of differentiation than having two different engines very close in HP.

Being that the Camaro is quite a bit lighter 270HP should be fine.

This has to be one of the most bungled, idiotic press launches of a new model/refresh in the past 5 years.

Grainy images of the vehicle from hideous angles, shown briefly on a single network that averages about 30k viewers in any given hour? Plus a picture of the car's vaguely changed, bare metal body — without any parts attached?

What is wrong with GM? Why do GM managers always screw up?

Do you not know the difference between a press release and leak? That wasn't the reveal man.

The new Camaro is a stumble for GM. It looks like an older version of the current car and the current one looks a lot better.
