BMW Officially Approve X2 Crossover To Rival Evoque - How Long Until Everyone Else Jumps On THAT Bandwagon
BMW has approved the launch of a coupe-styled crossover called the X2 to rival the Range Rover Evoque, a report said.

The five-door X2 will take exterior styling cues such as a steeply raked liftback-style tailgate from the larger, coupelike X4 and X6 models, Autocar reported, citing company sources.

BMW will start testing prototypes of X2 within weeks, Autocar said, citing engineers at the automaker’s prototype workshop. The X2 will launch in 2017, the magazine said.

Let's face it, folks: Rightly or wrongly, SUVs are immensely popular in North America. Take note of the next parking lot you enter, or the next stop light that gives you pause, or the driveways in the next neighborhood your drive, and compare how many SUVs and "light trucks" there are compared to the traditional sedan or coupes. Somewhere around 1/3 or so, by my entirely unscientific tally.

So when we get into discussions about some auto manufacturer jumping on some SUV bandwagon, or whether they're offering too many different SUV models or variants, keep that first paragraph in mind, and realize it's only business. They're just making products that appeal to a huge part of the consumer market.

Useless vehicle but I'm sure there are plenty of smug pricks who'll buy it just for the badge.

I like that new Lexus NX (except the front not so much). That is one hell of a design one hell of a design indeed (except the front).

Oh, how rude, I didn't bring up a comment of what I think about the BMW X6.....I mean X2.

I love competition in any segment! I hope BMW brings a credible player to the field. One thing I do see is there are those that are simply looking for a raised hatchback with AWD and there are those looking for something that has some semblance of off road capabilities. I would guess BMW is targeting that latter market but it sure would be neat to see them target the former which the Evoque clearly is part of.

Next step: X2.5, Z4.5, etc.
