STUD OR DUD? Volkswagen Golf R400 Prototype Caught Circling Nurburgring

Volkswagen is readying a red-hot Golf hot hatch with more than 400bhp - and our spies have now caught the VW Golf GTI hyper-hatch for the first time, as it undergoes durability testing near the Nurburgring in Germany.

Our photographs reveal the car just weeks after VW group powertrain chief Dr Heinz-Jakob Neusser told CAR magazine the Golf R400 concept car was a live project and would reach production.

It's the first official confirmation that VW will launch the Golf R400 concept as a production car. And it sounds like it could become the hottest hatch of all, as the GTI rat race continues to gather momentum. It should come as no surprise that Mercedes is preparing a brawnier A45 AMG with - you guess it - closer to 400bhp.

A VW hot hatch is a good thing, but this will be priced $15K more than what makes sense. This will most likely push the "GTI" into the $50K range. #STUPID

STUD! but a really expensive STUD! Wish it would be around $35K but like MD said, this will be in the $50K range which is crazy but if you can afford it, have fun!

$50K will buy FAR BETTER sports cars: Mustang GT, next Camaro SS, 370Z,...

It all depends on your definition of "better". I can purchase a GT-R or Z06 far cheaper than a 911 Turbo but are they necessary better? I would be perfectly happy with any of the 3 but if I don't mind spending the money, I would take the 911 Turbo. This Golf R400 will perform just as good as any Mustang GT or 370Z there will be less of them on the road and will hold its value way better. After 3 years than GT will be worth less than half its value.
