Chevrolet Opens Order Books For 2016 Volt - Do You Know Anyone Ready To Pull The Trigger?

The second-generation Chevrolet Volt is now available to order at US-bound dealerships. The 2016 Chevrolet Volt builds upon its predecessor’s success, pushing the plug-in hybrid envelope further in the eco-friendly segment of the market. So what’s there to know?

Underpinned by the brand new GM D2UX/D2XX platform, the 2016 Volt is better in every aspect. Compared to the 2015 model year, the new kid on the block uses new oily bits. A 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 101 horsepower joins a two-motor Electric Drive unit with 149 horsepower and 294 lb-ft (398 Nm).

I do not know of anyone who is keen to get one of these. Its an admirable engineering effort but I'm not sure its right for its intended market. Its too "cheap-looking" for its price and conversely, its too expensive for people who want an inexpensive small, sub-compact car.

Its failed at being "all things to all people"...sadly it is "few things to few people."

There will be cash on the hood before you know it.

I don't think you can compare the Volt to the Edsel.

The Edsel was an attempt by Ford to produce a new Upmarket "brand" of cars to compete with Oldsmobile and Buick. IT was supposed to sell in those numbers - was hardly innovative for the time - (Ie - no new power technology) - and failed because of strange styling in a "conservative" market.

The Volt was never intended to be a new Brand of cars - it was/is a basis for the production of a new technology (Plug in Hybrid) - it was not intended to sell in large volumes (They did not expect it to sell in Prius number). Recent developments in the Oil industry - has resulted in a lower demand for alternative fuel vehicles in general. But quite a number of other manufacturers have gotten on the bandwagon for pug-in Hyrids - and the Volts still has the lead in the technology. Had the price of oil continued to rise - instead of falling rapidly - the Volt would be a big seller.

I'd love one if they just had a wagon so I can keep my dogs out of the backseat. I love sports cars and have a PCar in the garage but much of the time I just want to get from A to B without as much environment impact.
