Is The Third Time a Charm for Lexus Motto?

Is The Third Time a Charm for Lexus Motto?
For some unexplained cosmic reason, many automakers have lately decided to tinker with or even totally change their advertising mottos or slogans. We definitely know that nothing is sacred when even BMW's "The Ultimate Driving Machine" slogan is rumo(u)red to be ditched.

Now we get word that Lexus' own advertising slogan, which started out as "The Relentless Pursuit of Perfection" and, in 2000, evolved into the more alliterative "The Passionate Pursuit of Perfection", may be tampered with yet again.

A recent trademark filing shows that two weeks ago, Toyota registered "The Passionate Pursuit of Potential" and "The Pursuit of Potential."

Could a new tag line for one of Japan's most prestigious brand be in the works?

I agree. Changing slogans is a marketing mistake, especially if your brand is successful. It will end up confusing people as we've seen before.

Anyone remember Tetley's in the UK? They used a successful slogan for generations (can't remember which) and changed it sometime in the late 1990s. The results? Confused customers and poor sales. Rupert, remember that one?

Will Lexus's aren't that great or amazing of car's, thus the reason their not very popular world-wide.
Untill Lexus starts taking more risks & setting more trends, they'll never be a REAL contender!

"The L in the Lexus logo looks lame. That's probably what the L stands for. Talk about a lack of creativity or identity. This is probably why their vehicles have looked lame and bland all these years. The letter L just doesn't inspire much creativity or enthuisiam at all.

Since they're so obsess with letter as a logo, Lexus should buy the rights to the Superman logo. That's the ONLY logo I can see that looks better than even the Mercedes three pointed star. Then Mercedes will start sweating big time."

you have things backasswards. it is the PRODUCT that is primary, not the logo.

while i somewhat agree the lexus logo is not special in a design sense (it seems having a circle/oval was deemed a requirement, to conform to the toyota logo; the scion followed suit), it has gained recognition due to the excellence of the PRODUCTS it represents.

the acura and infiniti logos are more interesting designs, but neither has the prestige of the lexus logo. simple because, excellent as the cars are, they have not made as big a splash on the market as the equally excellent lexus cars.

the mb tri-star is a clean and recognizable logo, but its "prestige" is much diminished when you see it emblazoned on huge, ugly TRUCKS and BUSES.

your praise of the superman emblem/logo is not valid from a design point of view. it appeals mainly to juveniles.

Lexus is built for the US and they give what customers want. Unlike some other companies that only care about their own thoughts and "independent designs." I guess what customers want doesn't matter to some companies. Toyota is the best selling because they have cars for everyone. From teenagers to oldies.

ricemaster, i agree (kinda) with you. think of all the fantastic japanese and chinese films we don't get, or are diluted. think of the ring (the film). the american version was about as scary as a hamster, the japanese one......
martial arts films, house of flying daggers? was that released in america? it was good. americans dilute everything, then stick a load of shiny letters and chrome on it.
food-they invented "fast food" otherwise known as garbage.
culture-scares most american tourists.
the arts-relies heavily on other cultures for influences, like spanish or japanese.
chrome-used up most of it in the 50s.
why doesn't america have a proper cultural identity? because its too young and borrows from others. in 500 years it will have a real culture, just like britain does now.
wait, america's too new to have history, borrows from others, is an "imitation" of other cultures....
have just found the link between lexus and america?

Well, I hate to turn this into a racial argument but I do feel that Lexus tries to abandon it's Japanese heritage in America, and I think that's a shame. Why not let the consumer embrace you for who you really are as opposed to trying to be something you're not.

The fact is, a large number of Lexus owners don't know that Lexus is a Toyota subsidiary. Also, look at Lexus top executives--all white and none speak Japanese. I think not only is it a bad judgement, but also sends off the wrong message, especially because I happen to be a black guy who speaks Japanese.

The fact is, Lexus is marketed to whites in a way to make them believe it's a "white" company, and the reality is that that's farthest from the truth.

I don't like Lexus and I don't lke the way they selectively market, manipulate, and contrive facts in their favor (hence Audi's hybrid firsts, all of a sudden a Lexus "creation" with the RX).

AUDIMAN4AUDIMAN4 - 9/19/2006 11:12:20 PM

Regardless, Lexus should have some prominent Japanese top level executives. The fact that they don't sends the message, "we want to deny that this is a Japanese company".

I don't care if Audi, BMW, or Mercedes don't have any non-white executives. But Lexus, being Japanese, should atleast have some Japanese representation at those levels.

Audi's DUO, which went on sale in Europe in 1997 was the first premium car with a hybrid.

"ApexAlex

"Your defense of their logo is about as creative as their use of the letter L for a logo. If their product is as superior as you say, then wouldn't it make sense for them to want to associate themselves with Superness rather than Lameness? It's a fact they've been branded lame/bland/boring/diluted for the last 16 yrs"

i wasn't so much "defending" their logo as pointing out how inane your fixation on logos are. seeing the "L" and saying it stands for "lameness," and projecting "S" to mean "superness" is ALL STRICTLY IN YOUR OWN MIND.

ultimately, the PRODUCT defines the brand and logo, NOT the reverse.

a little automotive history: up thru the mid-1950s, Pontiac was thought of as a meek, "teachers' car!" yes, that same pontiac which now claims to "Build Excitement." they didn't change the brand name, they changed the PRODUCTS!

BUICK has been trying to do the same, trying to dump the "old men's car" image. ditto Cadillac, which is somewhat succeeding.

as for lexus being "branded lame/bland/boring/diluted for the last 16 yrs," well, considering that in that time it has vaulted out of nowhere to become the NUMBER ONE luxury brand, maybe that's exactly what lux buyers want.

having models PERFECTLY satisfying those clients does not prevent lexus from ALSO trying to conquest even more MB and BMW customers with the IS and GS models.

the thousands of happy ES and LS buyers obviously are NOT the boy racers you would prefer them to be.

- RICEMASTER do you belive Lexus isn't succesfull because white folks prefer german cars ?!
- well the french, italians, british, and most americans are white, but they still buy premium german cars over their own national carmakers, so does that make them racist of their own race ?!
- so are arabs in the middle east and japanese racist because they buy german cars ?!

What is the asianess of asian cars ?!
To me they always seemed like kitschy copy cat.
That's the problem IMO, there is no real asianess/heritage of asian cars.
