Obama's Failed Master Plan? States Begin Abandoning EV Incentives

On May 19, Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy stood in Ken Crowley's Plainville, Conn., Ford dealership to unveil a state-funded cash rebate of up to $3,000 for Connecticut residents and businesses that buy or lease electric vehicles.

The pilot program also includes a little something for dealers: a spiff of $300 or $150, depending on the amount of the customer rebate, for salespeople and others involved in the sale of each EV.

One person at the event -- an installer of solar panels -- spotted a white, 2015 Ford Fusion Energi in Crowley's showroom and bought it that day.

Here's how a government EV incentive works:

(1) Come to the realization that EVs are expensive, and people aren't buying them. In plain English, if the manufacturer wants to make a profit on each vehicle sold, they have to sell it at a price that is much higher than what just about everybody believes it's worth.

(2) Feds borrow money they don't have*, from a Chinese bank, and give a pile of it to a prospective EV buyer to make it appear that the purchase price is lower, in the hope of influencing them to but an "affordable" EV.

(3) The money the Feds borrowed is added to the national debt, which averages out to about $58,400 owed by each man, woman, and child in the United States :-( So basically, everyone in the US goes a little deeper in debt so a very small number of people will buy an EV.

*If you believe the government is simply spending taxpayers' money rather than borrowing it, realize that the national debt is about $18.628 trillion, and each year, the Feds spend more money than they bring in! In 2015, they plan to spend $583 billion dollars more than they bring in (that's called an "annual deficit)". Yes, EV subsidies are borrowing money they don't have to help out an industry that isn't economically feasible. And yes, this isn't the only example of this sort of thing. That's the nature of bailouts and subsidies. And yes, the US Federal government isn't the only government doing it. And yes, some other countries do similar things.

Now factor in that Obama DOUBLED the all-time debt of run up by all the presidents before him and it becomes even more sinister.

Matty, just think how dangerous you would be if you at least held a high school diploma:

- Barack Obama: Added $6.167 trillion, a 53% increase to the $11.657 trillion debt level attributable to President Bush at the end of his last budget, FY 2009.

- George W. Bush: Added $5.849 trillion, a 101% increase to the $5.8 trillion debt level at the end of Clinton's last budget, FY 2001.

- Bill Clinton: Added $1.396 trillion, a 32% increase to the $4.4 trillion debt level at the end of Bush's last budget, FY 1993.

- George H.W. Bush: Added $1.554 trillion, a 54% increase to the $2.8 trillion debt level at the end of Reagan's last budget, FY 1989.

- Ronald Reagan: Added $1.86 trillion, 186% increase to the $998 billion debt level at the end of Carter's last budget, FY 1981.

Regan had the biggest ever administration debt growth, followed by George (the idiot son) Bush, followed by Obama. The debt grew the most dollar-wise during President Obama's term, but can't look at the top line debt as the main indicator, it is the % growth that counts most. A large part of the debt increase was because of lower taxes collected and stimulus packages designed to climb out of the great recession that Bush (the idiot son) drove the US into.

Failed, perhaps, flawed, yes! The only good EVs are the ones with long ranges and they are still too expensive, duh!

@ TheSteve: I am with you but is there a way to include in your rationale the environmental impact (I hope gain) in the long run?

EVs are not better for the environment. They merely shift the pollution elsewhere. Electricity generation is not 100% clean NOT EVEN CLOSE. Moreover the batteries in EVs have many toxins in them. Reality: modern conventional vehicles are greener than EVs.

EVs and hybrids are for stupid people. Please don't ever think you are eco friendly or doing your part. It's like the celebrities that drive around in their Prius or Tesla trying to send out an eco message to the stupid masses but then they hop on their private jet for a weekend in Monaco.
Where do you think you electricity comes from?
70% still comes from fossil fuel.
Do you know how much extra pollution was produced to make your ev/hybrid vs a conventional vehicle?
How about the disposal impact on the environment?

I've done more for the environment by keeping my super reliable 98 Mercedes E320 with 320,000mi than any EV/Hybrid owner will ever dream of. I changed my car battery twice since 1998 and still get a solid 27mpg with spirited driving. How many battery packs are you going to need to reach 300k miles? How much coal is going to get burned to charge your eco car for 300k miles?

By the way, if you some of you don't understand my reference to a Monaco weekend let me clarify a bit.
A celebrity round trip from LA to Monaco in a G5 will burn approximately 12,000 gal of fuel. For the average person that is 25 YEARS of driving a conventional car. Think about that for a moment.

While they drive around in their hybrid/ev sending out a green message they burn more fuel in one plane ride than the average person driving for 25 years.
That is just the plane ride. Add the fuel cost for the yacht once they get to Monaco and we could easily be at 100 YEARS of fuel for the average person.

I would rather see a celebrity driving around in a Bugatti than pretend they are eco friendly with their stupid hybrid/ev vehicle.
