2006 R500: Idles Like a Truck

I've always liked the smooth, continuous powerband of Mercedes' 5.0-liter V8, but in the R500, it's unusually noisy at idle. Edmunds.com blogger wonders whether this is a truck-based SUV or a sophisticated wagon.

I've experienced that old V8 from MB a few times and it never struck me as unrefined. It wasn't the newest or most technologically advanced engine out there, but it was not rough.

In different cars and under different weights, engine idling can change as someone once told me. Correct me if I am wrong on that, somebody.

BMW530i, there is nothing worse than sitting in one's office with nothing to do and it is even worse to admit it.
You need to find some stimulating and gainful employment.

I am gainfully employed. Today however, I had nothing to do. Could have gone home early if I wished, but I gave in to arguing with Will. ;)

Trade it in for a BMW, problem solved.

I haven't driven the R500 so I can't say if the drive is good or not. But I think the exterior could have been much better. It looks like a station wagen.

i don't mind the r class' profile, but the front is horrible. imo it should be MORE like a station wagon.

Or you could trade it in for a Q7 4.2, which is more luxurious, faster, lighter (in weight), IMHO way better-looking, offers just as comfortable seating, less-expensive, etc, etc.

Ricemaster,

Wasn't I the first to tell y'all Merc V8 shakes like a crude truck? Now a major publication is confirming what I've said.
===================================

Yeah, because you're a troll. Remember your SLK55 AMG comments? Rubbish...

SOHC MB V8's and V6's sound like diesels at idle, and they only have 10:1 compression ratios, which is not very high. The new DOHC engines are more refined but still don't match BMW or Lexus for smoothness...

Idles like a truck, looks like a hearse.

I feel your pain, 001.

i think the r class's main competitor is the q7, or even mercs own gl. the x5 also provided even more competition now. and who would pick the r class over any of those vehicles?

============================================

I think people are basing to many of their comments on the exterior looks of the R-Class. Design is subjective. I used to think it was butt ugly, but now, I think it looks "ok" but it is still not the classiest Mercedes' out there.

As for appeal, I think the R-Class has lots of it. Safety, solidity, quality, power, AWD and interior space. Most important, it has the MB badge. In effect, a very appealing car to wealthy families that are looking for something different than your run-of-the-mill SUV.

I'd never get one though.

q7, q7, q7, q7, q7, q7.
and the q7 looks better.
i just really don't understand the point of it, and the looks are a major thing for me. it is ugly. tone down the headlamps then maybe it would look good.

Rupert-

And fix the side profile, and give it better rims, and make it less like a minivan!

And I STILL wouldn't pick it over the Q7!

Q7 is less money than R500, a lot more powerful, weighs less, better handling, looks better to most, has an equally if not more beautiful interior, and has more interior space, AND better gas mileage to top it off!
