FIRST Impression Of The Bentley Bentayga Has Us Wondering If Its The All-New KING Of The Road — Ton Of NEW Details!
In the evolving media landscape, a lot of people have questioned whether the buff books really have a place anymore. With more disruptive web sites with super rich content, it's tough to be in the media space. But every once and a while, a publication will wow us.

That just happened with Autocar's coverage on the all-new Bentley Bentayga.

The boys and girls from the U.K. were invited on an epic adventure with a small fleet of research and developmental prototypes that have taken a beating. It's all a part of the gigantic effort to create one of the world's most luxurious and toughest sport-utility vehicles. Personally, I think this story is a must read.

Some of the highlights from this piece:

- The Bentayga will feature an all-new W12 motor good for over 540 horsepower and over 500 lb.-ft. of torque
- It will have double the ECUs of a Continental GT — according to Bentley this actually increases reliability
- Three different seating options — seven seater, five seater, four buckets
- Incredibly capable off-road — THINK: first-gen Touareg off-roading meets Mulsanne when it comes to ride comfort
- No slouch when it comes to on-road performance — zero to 60 in less than five seconds
- Filled to the brim with technology — nightvision, lane departure, self parking, surround view camera, head's up display, adjustable traction management

...

“There was no luxury SUV with the Bentley attributes of strength, solidity and power – or four-wheel drive. This is a 21st century grand tourer. The experience is always the same inside. The only thing that changes is what’s outside.  It has Bentley values with an added utility element..."

...The source of this considerable force is a completely new 6.0-litre W12 engine. According to head of powertrain Paul Williams, the engine “has been redesigned from scratch, with barely a washer retained..."

...This is a go-anywhere car of a different kind, and although the most restrictive terrain it’s likely to encounter will be the world’s most exclusive valet parking addresses, Bentayga owners will doubtless be content that it can also tackle the planet’s most challenging roads and tracks with potent nonchalance...

This is going to be their biggest seller. No doubt.

Bentley's US sales are tiny and the model lineup is antiquated, so no doubt that this will be the biggest seller.

Question - agent 00r - Is there any inherent advantage to the W12 over a V-12 in vehicles this big? I understand that a W-12 is more compact but these vehicles hardly need that. I have driven a number of V-12 engined cars - and those engines are silky smooth - often surprisingly so. Is the W-12 just as smooth? I understand that many V-12 engines were simply combinations of two straight sizes - I do not see the reason for four 3cylinder engines - nor the basis.

The W12 was simply an expedient move on VW's part of casting two VR6 engines together. It gave them a 12 cylinder without having to start from scratch and shared major components with the VR6. From intake, exhaust, and engine cooling, everything about it is a disadvantage.

Tom, I'd have to do research but from a completely unscientific, cursory perspective Matt over here is pretty much spot on.

I will say I've never been thoroughly impressed with W12 motors. Yes they have power but a V12 runs smoother and in my experience the transmissions mated to V12s operated smoother. There's always a bit of clunkyness with W12s and how their gearboxes shift.

While I have fell in love with Ferrari V12s and Aston Martin V12s, the BMW 760 I piloted was one of the most lovely experiences behind the wheel. So smooth, so quiet, so perfect.

Why is anyone acting like this is an all new vehicle when it's just a badge engineered Audi. It's vulgar commercialism. And yes it will sell like no Bentley every has, but it's just an Audi.

Yes - if you are shopping for a Flying Spur - purchase an Audi S8 instead, its a much better and more modern car.

I suspect that if you are inclined to purchase a Bentayga, should should just get a fancy, loaded-up Q7 and will have a better experience.

When is Bentley rolling out the Porsche Macan/Audi Q5 clone? That will be the big seller.

99.9% of the people that purchase these cars don't care what's underneath, they want the badge showing all of us that they have the means to get one. You could take a COROLLA and put a BENTLEY badge and they will buy it. So stop drinking the "hatorade" because you cannot afford one.

Vulgar commercialism? Why? The Porsche Maccan is also an Audi. The Bentley Continental is a Volkswagen. The Lamborghini Huracan is an Audi. The list goes on and on... Nothing wrong with any of these vehicles.
