SPIED: The Next-Gen BMW M5 STARTS Testing At The Ring — What Will It NEED To Get AHEAD Of Its Competition?
It seems like the BMW M5 just came out yesterday, but for those who have been keeping an eye on the clock it has been around for several years. Not to mention it did just undergo a refresh along with its sibling, the M6.

You know what that means. It's time for an all-new M5 to come around and get the Bavarians back at the top of the podium.

With a slew of all-new souped up luxury vehicles, the M5 has its fair share of competition. These days it's coming from all angles with the likes of the crazy powerful four-door coupes and 550+ horsepower sport-utility vehicles. I have to ask: Why even bother with an M5 anymore? It seems stodgy and old man-ish.

Well, it seems BMW is set to address these concerns with its next-gen M5. Rumored to come with optional all-wheel drive, it will undoubtedly be the quickest M5 to date. That's because we're thinking it will make over 600 horsepower and the added traction plus a dual-clutch 'box will rocket this thing off the line in a much more surefooted fashion than its rear-wheel drive counterpart.

Armed with the latest batch of spy pics, the sedan looks like it has grown a bit in size and will feature an all-new pair of large kidney front grilles that are, of course, integrated into the headlights. Although the vehicle is an early stage tester — it lacks a unique front valence, side mirrors and its own wheels — when you get around to the back its quad-tipped exhaust gives this M5 away. Oh, and check out that massive big brake kit. This should come as no surprise given how large the standard discs on the current-gen M5 are.

It looks like it will turn out dull as dirt like the new 7 Series. Have the designers NOT seen the Gran Lusso? BMW has always kind done the one sausage three lengths mentality, but for crying out loud, why wasn't the Gran Lusso the sausage?

Trim the fat (weight) since it got a little bloated the last model. Forget the run flats on ALL models; they cost more, get LESS mileage on them and ride too rough. And I wouldn't mind being able to get grey leather without paying special premium price to get it. Then I'll be back to buy one then like I had in 2002.

The run flats are vile.

M's have never had runflats. Not a single one.

The 5-Series getting ahead of its competition? For starters, how about making it NOT drive like a Buick LeSabre.

Lose weight, more carbon fiber, get rid off the electronic driving system, and an AMG engine ;-)
