F1 Fan Perception Moves From Exciting To Boring In Just 5 Years - How Would You Turn The Series Around?

A Formula 1 study released yesterday shows that in just 5 years fans have gone from describing the sport as “Exciting” to “Boring” and that the more things change, the more things stay the same.

The 17-page report, which polled more than 200,000 fans of the sport, also revealed that fans are growing older and many fondly remember an era that didn’t go over so well in its time.

The study was conducted by the Grand Prix Drivers Association and Motorsport.com, and polled more than 215,000 fans from nearly 200 countries.

Among some of the more surprising responses were the fans’ favorite driver (Kimi Raikkonen), their favorite team (Ferrari) and their favorite era of F1 (2000s). It may not be surprising considering the average age of an F1 fan is 37 years old — the approximate wheelhouse for the Schumacher era. The winningest driver in F1 history finished second in a list of all-time drivers behind Ayrton Senna and ahead of Alain Prost.

Reduce the over regulation of every little thing about the car. F1 is supposed to be the pinnacle of motor racing but in fact it has almost become a spec series race with little to no room for innovation. Remove the wings but add wheel spats to make up for the lost wing advertising space. Have tires that do not marble so that there is the potential to have other racing lines through corners even late in the race. Have a fuel limit of say 15gal in race 1 dropping to 10 gal by the last race and drop it by 5% each year for the next 5 years or something along those lines. Allow any fuel manufacturer to participate with the caveat being they will sell the same fuel to race attendees as they motor homeward. Allow any engine/hybrid/other solution within reason. Get rid of pit speed limits, racing is inherently dangerous don't dumb it down until it is as safe as synchronized swimming (I do agree with having safety standards for the cars and track). Personally I think motor racing in general has become more boring due to

F1 is boring to me because it's so technically perfect among the teams that the fans have been forgotten.

I'd rather see street cars with minimal modifications beyond stock--safety concerns addressed of course--on twisty tracks.

There are series like that as well. If you look back at the era between say 1967-2000 you will see a lot of exciting racing with some crazy technical innovation. Current F1 - agree with you.

One last change I would add. Make winning more important than consistency to incentivize technical innovation over stability and reliability.
