CAR WARS! BMW i8 vs. Mercedes-AMG GT vs. Porsche 911 Turbo — WHICH German Gets YOUR Vote?
The past five years has been exceedingly interesting when you look at the German contingent of high-performance autos. Not only have we seen a shift away from the likes of natural aspiration to keep up with the horsepower wars, we're starting to see something we never thought we'd see:

Hybrid competition.

While Mercedes showed off a fully electric SLS AMG and Porsche was happy to deliver the super expensive 918 Spyder, at the $100,000-150,000 price point, you really have three solid options — four including the Audi R8.

That would be the all-new BMW i8, the all-new Mercedes-AMG GT and the legendary Porsche 911 Turbo.

If you were to ask me, this is what I'd tell you: IF you're looking for pure, unadulterated speed then you have to go with the 911. Not much is faster. IF you want that old-school vibe of a long hood, short trunklid and a burly V8, then it's clear the GT is your pick. And IF you really want to stand out and enjoy a completely new driving experience that's a representation of the future, the i8 is a no brainer.

Our friends from Top Gear magazine decided to put the three to the test and see which was the one to have. Their end result? Well, I'll let you see for yourself:

These are three very disparate cars, and you could construct an argument for any of them to win. But despite that, despite the fact I usually have a deep and abiding love of beefy rear-drive AMGs, the GT finishes last. The other two are harder to separate, but in all honesty, if the god of road tests descended and told me I could drive away in one, it'd be the i8. I can't tell you how much it surprises me to be putting a petrol-electric ahead of an AMG and a 911, but the BMW is not just a sporty hybrid, it's a car that's enthralling and mesmerising on so many levels.

Having said that, WHICH all-new German sports car would YOU have in your garage?

I'd take the AMG GT for sure, exterior and interior are miles head of the i8 and 911, not to mention the sound.

The i8 would be great if I was to enter a science fair competition and could get over its polarizing looks.

The Porsche is well, classic Porsche, that being said I'd just snatch up a used 911 saving thousands and still have the identical design of a new one

My Choice 1: AMG GT, Choice 2: 911 and Choice 3: BMW. I'd have to agree with Car4Life about the BMW it just feels out of place here and doesn't seem like a true sports car vs a techie project.

I don't think the i8 really competes with the other two as it wasn't created for all out performance. That said, I happen to love its polarizing looks and its hi-tech mission so it would be my pick.

I8 or 911 it would depend on what side of the bed I woke up on. Today I woke up on the 911 side but tomorrow it could be the i8. The Merc does not do it for me and I was not sure exactly why. Got a nice long look at it last weekend at the DTM race in Nuremberg. Mercedes had a nice display of their AMG cars but the GT was almost the least appealing and I figured out why I don't like it. It seems like a car they wanted to be extreme but then it was smoothed over, like a layer of consumer blandness came over it, especially the rear. Anyways all really nice cars and I would be happy to have them in my garage.

#1 AMG GT...The engine is in the right place and it's styling is acceptable. Distant #2: 911...The engine is in the wrong place and sounds like a Hoover vacuum cleaner. I've never liked the 1963 styling. Even more distant #3 / i8...The boy-racer, Mitsibishi-Eclipse-of-the-future is uglier than ugly and I want a plug in vehicle why exactly?

I would take the AMG GT or the 911 any day before the i8. No satisfaction on driving a really fast golf cart.

I'm a Porschephile so it's the 911 Turbo for me. The AMG car gets cool points for being new but it just doesn't do it for me. The BMW is just an over styled gimmicky hybrid... Not even on my radar.
