Mercedes is on fire with product product product. Mercedes is not my favorite brand but I have to give them credit for their product offensive. They are running the bases much better than Audi and BMW.

Agreed, and I'll said it before and I'll say it again,

Mercedes Benz has the BEST OVERALL lineup, serving up hot products to both the haves and have nots.

Where else can you have a manager of a fast food Resturaunt or Walmart sit in the same showroom as the CEO, or heir to an Oil empire.

Mercedes has done one thing better than the other german premium car manufacturers - they have identified their customer and what their customer wants in the cars. So they separated the LUXURY car from the Sports sedan - producing cars that are more luxurious for the average customer - and relegating SPORTS sedans to AMG. And in the end I continue to believe that LUXURY cars are what the customer really wants - and is the reason why Lexus continues to sell when there are "better cars" (according to the race car drivers) available.

Now - Cadillac has to see this one and separate into Luxury cars and V-Class.

Agree.

I can really see a wider split between luxury and performance coming. Mercedes is already there. Lexus has luxury nailed and is trying for sport. For me, BMW seems suddenly adrift and Audi is laughable in its stasis.

I think the Lincoln Continental will be a game changer in the Mercedes E / BMW 5 PRICE BAND and that is how Lincoln will gain traction. It will be a large car for a medium price with gobs of panache. Its platform (likely a SuperFusion) is utterly incapable of true, AMG-level sport, but it is quite capable of buttery smooth luxury and Ecoboost speed. It will have manners yes, but not be an AMG canyon carver.

Spot-on.

I think Mercedes has the clearest vision of all the luxury brands. This vision is no more evident in their brand naming of "Mercedes-Benz", "Mercedes-AMG", and "Mercedes-Maybach". They are a luxury company first (Benz), and a performance brand second (AMG) and an ultra-luxury brand third (Maybach). I love the fact that they they will offer an AMG variant in every model going forward. Would love to see them create a Maybach variant for every model (i.e., LWB C-Class, etc).

I don't think BMW is that far off, though. But I do feel they need to make a commitment to their M cars and offer an M variant to all models, especially the 7 series. Even more importantly for BMW, they should take a divergent approach and create an higher-performing variant, above M, to reinforce their sporty heritage. So, instead of competing with MB's Maybach, they create a completely new category of ultra-sport.

Audi, despite their global success, I truly just feel they are a bit lost right now. Maybe the next few years will see a better idea of what their future products will be, but right now everything just feels relatively safe and bean-counterish.
