Alfa Romeo's Upcoming SUV Caught In The Wild - I Guess They Are Serious About A Comeback

Work is under way on the smaller of Alfa Romeo’s two new SUV models, with early mules already on the streets of Italy.

At last month’s unveiling of the new Alfa Romeo Giulia, Fiat Chrysler Auto boss Sergio Marchionne revealed the ambitious seven-model plan for the brand's revival, which includes two ‘Utility Vehicles’.

Arriving ‘between 2016 and 2018’, the two models are expected to be the equivalent of BMW’s X3 and X5 in size and market positioning.

The larger SUV is expected to be twinned with the upcoming Maserati Levante, although the Alfa will get its own exterior and interior design.

Marchionne--which is Italian for idiot--painted himself into a corner when he promised the greedy Italian unions that Alfa Romeos would be built in Italy. Thus the Alfa Romeo crossover has to be built on a platform made in Italy. The most expedient move would have been to reskin the Jeep Cherokee for the smaller Alfa Romeo crossover, but that platform in that configuration is not made in Italy, so he has to cobble something together using the lackluster 500L architecture.

Looks like an overgrown Fiat. The front end, headlights and that weird A pillar.
Hopefully this is a cobbled up mule, as it is pretty ugly. Not a winner for sure.
Matt has the right idea about how they should have done it.

Moreover, they could reskin the Renegade/500X, throw in a hot engine, give it some coupe-crossover styling and quickly produce a B segment product.

Obviously that's the 500L front end, and equally obviously the production version of the Alfa isn't going to look like this.

Even if you give the pig perfume, pearls, and a nice dress, she is still a pig of a pedestrian platform underneath.

That's no where near what it will look like. Alfa Romeo designs beautiful
vehicles.
