DRIVEN: FIRST Impression Of The All-New Audi R8 May Have You Wanting One OVER A Lamborghini Huracan
When the Audi R8 landed on the scene, it was a HUGE deal. A lot of people didn't know what to expect when the four rings threw its hat into the ring, but one thing was certain: it proved the company could build something that would entice.

While the company's portfolio at the time was full of rather clinical German offerings, the R8 gave the company a shot in the arm.

Now Audi has a helluva job trying to follow that up. These are mighty big shoes to fill. And while the first-gen car shared some things in relation to its cousin, the Lamborghini Gallardo, a lot more is shared between the second-gen car and the Lamborghini Huracan. Of course this is a good thing.

With reviewers critiquing the Huracan's ability to understeer, it seems Audi has an opening to improve upon the Huracan's performance. While I won't give it entirely away, I suggest you read this review if you're in the market for the raging bull.

What is interesting to note is that Audi got the V10 Plus into journalist's hands first. Instead of of introducing variants in a traditional hierarchy, the company is starting at the top and working its way down. Peculiar.

From the initial sounds of it, it seems Autocar is favoring the second-gen product over the first gen in a big way. If you can get over its rather edgy looks, it sounds like this may be the one to have over a Porsche 911 Turbo and Mercedes-AMG GT.

Should I buy one?:

You might well. The R8 previously occupied a quiet little niche of its own – above most 911s, below most exotic supercars, even though it had the pace of the faster cars. Still does, actually. It doesn’t let up.

These days I’d put the Mercedes-AMG into the area the R8 finds itself too, while McLaren will drop the 540C and 570S in there as well soon enough. The R8 has to be good, then, and it is. It feels more visceral and alive than the Porsche 911 Turbo, and although it’s less raucous and caricatured than a Mercedes-AMG GT, it’s the more accomplished handling car. It does all the things the old R8 did superbly well, and tweaks the competence up by about 10-20% in every key area. Audi still knows how to make a great sports car.

I like that the vertical blotch is gone, but the face looks like a big fish mouth. This is not an attractive car. For the money, I'd go with a Porsche because for the money an R8 is just an Audi.

I don't know if it is just me - but I never actually bought into the idea that Audi was an equal to Bmw and Mercedes - I always placed them a notch down - competing with Volvo and the like. The fact is - they do not sell much other than small sports sedans and cuvs. Their big cars are boat anchors.

THe fact is - no AUDI - no matter how good - will ever have the Cache' of a Lamborghini - and that is why VW bought Lambo - they knew it.

TomM writes "...no AUDI - no matter how good - will ever have the Cache' of a Lamborghini..."

I don't believe Audi is trying to. That's why the R8 is priced well below a Lambo. They're totally different animals.

As for Audi not being an equal with BMW or Mercedes and competing with Volvo, I don't believe that's an accurate assessment either. The top 3 luxury brands used to be BMW, Mercedes and Lexus. Today they're BMW, Mercedes, and Audi... so we know that Audi competes with at least Lexus, and has actually surpassed them by some accounts (such as unit sales for a luxury manufacturer).

Are Audi "equals" with BMW and MB? That's very much a subjective call, aside from unit sales numbers putting them in the No.2 position, possibly poised to become No.1 (yeah, who cares... I know).

Speaking as a long-time BMW fan and owner (I've had 4 in the past 2 decades), and one who has recently sold his last 2 BMWs and is now driving a new Audi Q5 for the past 7 weeks, I chose Audi over BMW and Mercedes this time 'round because I got more of what I wanted, less of what I didn't want (in the way of having to buy a "package" just to get some of things I wanted), and at a lower price. Those factors scored big points for me! To *me*, this is the most pleasing vehicle I've owned so far. I'll let you know how reliable and durable it is over time, as compared to my previous BMWs.

Audi bought Lambo, not VW. And around the world, Audi are for the one's with money, compared with BMW/MB

TomM is certainly entitled to his opinion but that's okay for Audi because there are plenty of people in the world who buy Audis over BMWs and Mercedes-Benz's. Audi's customers are on average wealthier than BMW buyers as well.

Audi's sales might be slowing in China and its global growth rate is not keeping up with Mercedes-Benz or BMW so far this year, but Audi has the new Q7 and A4 right around the corner and despite people criticizing those models to no end on here, I think Audi has created two models that will sell extremely well.

Let's not forget the new A8, A6, Q8 and Q6 models will be out within the next 3-5 years as well. Each will be influenced by the Prologue concept. Audi is not sitting still and could very well dethrone BMW in the next 3-5 years if its A8, A6, Q8 and Q6 combine attractive design, with top-notch luxury, great performance, efficiency, innovation and price.

It's just ugly, even at half the price.

It is ugly...it's like a blue frog! And, those pretty wheels just makes it look like a blue frog sitting on some pretty wheels.
