Lexus plans a second 'flagship' model, hints at large SUV
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich., Aug 5 (Reuters) - Toyota Motor Corp's Lexus brand is planning to launch a second top-of-the-line "flagship" model to accompany a new generation of its LS sedan, the head of the brand's U.S. operations told Reuters on Wednesday.

"We need a flagship. It doesn't have to be a sedan," Jeff Bracken, Lexus division general manager, told Reuters on the sidelines of an industry conference.

Bracken noted the success of luxury sport utility vehicles such as Tata Motors' Land Rover brand, the Cadillac Escalade from General Motors Co and large SUVs coming from the German luxury automakers.

Luxury SUV sales have grown more quickly than sales of large luxury sedans, which have for decades anchored the top ends of the model lines of luxury auto brands. The SUV surge has prompted even luxury brands with no history of selling SUVs, such as BMW's Rolls-Royce, to develop models to compete in the super luxury SUV segment.

U.S. sales have been supported by a prolonged drop in gasoline prices. Average prices at the pump on Tuesday were $2.63, down 25 percent from a year ago, according to the AAA travel group.

"In addition to the LS (a large sedan), there could be another flagship in our lineup," Bracken said. "We'll define what it is in January."

Lexus also is looking to strengthen its SUV lineup by offering a version of the midsize RX SUV with a third row seat. An RX with room for seven or eight passengers is the No. 1 request from U.S. Lexus dealers, Bracken said. A new RX is due this fall but will not have a third row seat.

"We don't want to wait for a next generation" to add the extra seating row, Bracken said.

How about they plan something that isn't hideous?

The bigger the Lexus car or SUV will be the uglier and bigger that hideous spindle grill and the rest of that thing will be. Lexus cars and SUVs are already fat or bloated looking.

"Lexus need a CLS competitor"

Agreed. Outside the ES, IS, NX, & RX, Lexus current lineup of cars aren't very noteworthy & their overall product strategy is a mess as there really aren't any higher end cache models available that compete with the other European luxury brands.

If I were Toyota, I would make Land Cruiser a brand of premium SUVs, aim them at Land/Range Rover, and co-brand them with Lexus.

Lexus need a CLS competitor.

Actually - Calling them Lexus Land Rover is a good idea - and making a complete line of LLRs would allow Lexus to compete against a lot of different vehicles.

Still - Dexter1 has an obvious point. IF they use the current Cow-catcher grill design - it makes no difference what they call them!

Wow, thanks! Here are also some more pictures with interior shots.

Personally, I think this LX refresh looks horrendous, especially the interior. Lexus needs a entirely ALL NEW LX version SUV instead of using the "Lipstick on a Pig" approach as they've continually done on their more premium models such as the LX & LS.

@ monopoly1 .. i actually love the interior. interestingly enough I just bought my wife a nx 200t f sport, and i've come to appreciate their design language and the time they put into their products. Now having said that.. I agree they need to not be so lazy with the LX and LS. This new one is.. nice.. but as someone who was really looking at purchasing the qx80 limited(though a bit irritated that infiniti cuts so many corners, and that it's almost EXACTLY like the nissan patrol) I really liked the way lexus, at least to me, hadn't cut THAT many corners. Lets see what happens.. I'd like to see this LX in a better color and their top of line rims,(biggest) and the body raised a bit (air suspension was lowered I suspect in this picture), to perhaps see the full iteration of their design language.. lets see! Thanks for the pics!

Lexus being the leader in luxury Crossovers/SUVs is well positioned for a large model, just like their compact entry. A stretch RX makes perfect sense. Not sure why Toyota brand has kept the Land Cruiser with it at such a premium price. Likewise a new performance 4 door sedan in the LS price range could do well.

Lexus is already (allegedly) planning a longer wheelbase 7 passenger RX in the near future (2016 or 2017). Lexus however really needs to work on overhauling & completely revamping their larger SUV models.

Lexus has always been slow & somewhat lazy bringing newer upscale models to market because they've been able to rely on the large sales volumes of the ES, IS & RX. The ancient LX-570 along with the archaic GX-470 should have both been canned a long time ago & replaced with more modern, stylish SUV models.

Hey Lexless:
Here is a flash for you. People want midsize cross over vehicles. They do NOT want big and they do NOT want heavy, wallowing, clumsy, oversized SUV's

Open your eyes and smell the coffee.

Hey Uninformed:

If people only want "midsize cross over vehicles" then why are sales of "big & heavy, wallowing, clumsy, oversized SUV's" like the Chevy Tahoe/Suburban, GMC Yukon/Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade & Ford Expedition selling like hotcakes?

Put down the coffee, it's bad for your schizophrenia!
