BMW M3 Vs. Audi S4 - How Does Each Fare In A Detroit Based Comparison?

My biggest complaint with the latest “Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation” action thriller is that the BMW M3 doesn’t get as much screen time as Tom Cruise.

In its memorable appearance the ferocious four-door rampages through the cramped streets of Morocco variously chasing BMW sport bikes, dodging bullets and vaulting staircases. It’s a fitting product placement for the ultimate driving machine. Like Cruise’s ripped Ethan Hunt character, life with the 2015 M3 is never dull. The exhaust growls. Rivals challenge you at stoplights. Police lurk around every high-G corner.

But is this any way to live? The Audi S4 offers a simpler, quieter life.

In shopping for my latest car, I would have gone for the S4 had the dealer not tried to be a-holes and put a ridiculous offer up front with little negotiation (then they were chasing me down and begging me not to sign papers on a new car because they "could get me the deal I wanted" - well, you should have done that from the start) and if the S4 were out based on the new A4.

That being said, I cannot say enough about the 435i GC I chose. Every single day I cannot wait to get in my car and drive it and drive it hard. In manual mode, I clocked 0-60 in 4 secs. It might have even been 3.8 or 3.9. I take most sweeping turns about 10-20 mph faster than I ever did in my S5. Not because my S5 wasn't capable, but because I never felt the urge to do so.

I can just imagine how that would translate in an M3. Then again, my friend drives his brother's M4 regularly and he drove my 435i GC and said the biggest difference is the steering stiffness/effort and that my GC has more low-end grunt than the M4. But the M3/M4 have larger tires and are not run-flats, so I'm sure the handling is a bit different as well.

So, I guess my point is that I think it's better that the deal didn't work out on the S4 because I truly love the car I ended with. The only regret I have is not going with the M3/M4 like I had originally intended. BUT, I cannot wait to see what Audi does for the new S4.

IF there is ONE think that everyone agrees is the worst about buying a car - it is the negotiations - although one price doesn't work either. Recently I bought a new vehicle - and I specified that I was coming in to buy it with cash. So - I could not come in on the Memorial day weekend because the banks were closed on Monday - so I was buying on Tuesday. And the salesman had the nerve to quote me a price that HE said would only be good on the weekend - and NOT on Tuesday (There was no change of month either). When I asked HOW I could do that - he said to take a loan out - and then pay it back next week! (There was a penalty for that too) - because - and get this - HE WOULD NOT TAKE A DEPOSIT on the car - and wait till Tuesday for the rest of the money!

I bought a vehicle - as I said - on Tuesday. But not from that guy.
