Believe It Or Not, You Are Now Living In The Golden Age Of American Muscle Cars

The Golden Age of Detroit Muscle is now.

As classic performance cars from the 1960s and '70s fill Woodward Avenue for Dream Cruise week, one fact is undeniable: The Detroit Three's performance cars are better today than ever before.

Despite strict emissions limits, concerns about climate change and unpredictable gasoline prices that would make a '60s hot rodder pull over and weep, the D3's modern performance cars could run rings around the classics. And they're surprisingly affordable when compared with price tags of some exotic cars with similarly high-performing engines

It is quite amazing especially when you consider that the Shelby Mustang GT350R and the Corvette Z06 offer supercar performance for decidedly non-supercar prices. Furthermore, a standard Mustang GT, Camaro SS, and base Stingray do what the Europeans do for much less. It's a good time to buy an American performance car.

The 'Vette is a good example of "There's More Than One Way To Build A World-Class Sports Car." The numbers say it can hold its own on the track and skid pad against the likes of Ferrari, for a small fraction of the price, and far fewer visits to the shop. I wish that sort of know-how and attitude showed up in more American cars, and not just sports cars.

There's a saying: Any idiot can build a world-class sports car that sells for $350,000, but it takes a healthy dose of genius to do that for just $80 grand.

The Stingray and Z06 show why the NSX will be another DUD for Acura once the JDM fanmen buy theirs.

The days of the American Muscle car ENDED Long ago - when you had to build your own engine to make the car go fast. Once they started to making the engines themselves - most of these cars became "chick" cars. And today - calling THIS - the golden age - is a laugh. With most cars you - and all of their computer controls - you cannot build an engine - you need an electronics degree to make it worth. And we did not build world class engines for $80 grand - houses did not cost that much - in fact $80 grand bought a really big house.

Today - the resurgence of high powered cars comes with a price - that the average backyard mechanic simply cannot afford. Add in all the drug money - and you get something other than what was a uniquely American pastime - building a Hot Rod - into the realm of only the rich and famous. Bring Back the early 50"s Hudson!!!!!

@TomM Why denigrate the excellent muscle cars of now by retreating into the past? I wrench on vintage Detroit iron, but when all is said and done, it's how the car goes. I have access to a 68 Shelby Mustang GT500KR with the CobraJet and it is a killer car to drive, but the Mustang GT 5.0 will outdo it on every muscle car parameter and is a much more hospitable car to live with. I cannot wait to see the GT350R. Don't get me wrong, I love the vintage metal and I do understand the allure of hopping up cars because I have two crazy TVR projects going, but we are in a golden era of "Detroit" muscle car marvelousness.

Yes...yes...yes! I have a Z51 C7 and its awesome. I'm always planning what my next car will be but cannot think of anything at any price that would make me sell this one...as long as I can get in or out of it (now 70 years old)!
