Google's New Alphabet Spin Off May Infringe On BMW's Trademarks
BMW today said it was looking into whether Google infringed any trademark rights after the Silicon Valley-based group set up a new company called Alphabet, which is also the name of a BMW subsidiary.

"We are examining whether there are any implications over trademarks," a BMW spokeswoman said today. The spokeswoman said there were currently no plans to take legal steps against Google.

BMW's Alphabet, which provides services to companies with vehicle fleets, operates in 18 countries and supplies 530,000 vehicles to corporate customers.

Google was not immediately available for comment.

Do you really think a company as buttoned up as Google would name a subsidiary "Alphabet" without first having their army of attorneys research even the slightest possibility of a conflict? Christ—all they have to do is Google it!

Fun Fact for the day:

A mom and pop hamburger stand had been in business for a looong time. They named it after their family name: McDonald's. Years later, the unrelated McDonald's fast-food chain appeared, got very big, very rich, and very powerful. They learned of the little burger joint, and took them to court, even though the little guys were there first and used the name first. The big and powerful McDonald's franchise argued that consumers there were more famous and widely known, and that consumers would get confused by another burger joint with the same name (even though the mom and pop shop didn't look anything like one of the giant's familiar looking restaurants, and didn't offer anything on the menu that was named similarly to The McDonald's.)

The big guy one. The little guy lost the right to continue using their own name for their restaurant, even though they were there first.

Lesson Learned: It doesn't matter who was first, or who is right. What matters is who has more money and power to influence the courts and show they're "right".
