BMW Considers Plug-in Hybrid M3 - Would You Remain Faithful Or Jump Ship For Traditional Power?

Aiming to give its iconic performance model a boost while also making it more environmentally friendly, BMW will migrate to a plug-in hybrid powertrain when the next version of its M3 sedan comes to market, several senior company officials have revealed.

The new system draws from both the German maker’s motorsports experience as well as some of the lessons it has learned since launching the BMW i battery-car sub-brand several years ago. Versions of the new drivetrain are expected to be used on a wide range of additional BMW models, and could be offered in both rear- and electric all-wheel-drive configurations.

The purpose of the "M" series is pure ultimate performance - anyone who laughingly suggests that it should be "greener" don't get it. And at the price range it is in - it sells in very small quantities anyway - so its "footprint" is miniscule to begin with. It is likely that a few Pine trees put out more Hydrocarbons.

Having said that -either a "Hybrid" "M" class delivers on the performance or it doesn't - and that will determine if it sells - not some environmental claim

Not saying that the M3 should be electrified, but the P1, the 918, the i8 and the LaFerrarri are all plugin hybrids and last time I checked they didn't exactly lack performance.
