SURPRISE! Volvo's All-New XC90 Is Selling...
I have to admit this isn't much of a surprise.

Volvo's all-new luxury sport-utility vehicle, the XC90, is shooting out the lights from a sales perspective. From a completely unscientific perspective, I've been seeing quite a few roaming the roads around the New York Tri-State region — more than I'd expect for such a fresh product.

And, according to Volvo, the company has received 57,000 orders for the all-new SUV. That's beyond the company's forecast of 50,000 copies in the first year of sales.

Now here's the kicker: Over three fourths of its buyers are going for the high-end Inscription model.

I wonder how many buyers would go for the R-Design version if that was available...

Newsflash to all automakers:
build something very attractive, has leading technology and meets your target market's needs and blam-o you'll knock it out the park!

Volvo's press release follows:

Huge demand for top of the range Volvo XC90

Three quarters of the orders for Volvo’s new XC90 are for the top of the range Inscription model, Volvo Cars has announced.

Volvo Cars also said it has received nearly 57,000 orders globally for the new XC90, outstripping forecast sales for this year of 50,000. The company is running three shifts at its plant in Torslanda, Sweden, to meet demand.

“With 76 percent of customers choosing the top end Inscription model, it is fair to say that we have now entrenched our position as a premium car maker,” said Alain Visser, Senior Vice President for Marketing Sales and Customer Service.

The new XC90 marks the beginning of a new chapter in Volvo’s history, capturing its future design direction, incorporating its own range of new technologies and utilizing its new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) technology.

The latest update on sales for the XC90 came as Volvo reported its financial results for the first half of 2015.

The company reported an operating profit of SEK1,660m for the first half of 2015, compared to SEK968m* for the same period in 2014. Revenue for the first half was SEK75,215m, up from SEK66,982m* in the first half of 2014.

Volvo is investing in a global transformation as part of its long term strategic ambition to enhance its position as a global premium car maker. Driven by the complete renewal of its product range, Volvo is aiming to almost double sales to around 800,000 cars a year in the medium term.

In the first half, Volvo also announced it will build a new manufacturing facility in South Carolina. Construction on the $500m plant near Charleston will start this fall and the new facility will have initial production of around 100,000 cars per year and be completed by 2018.

* The comparative figures for 2014 are restated, as Volvo Cars gained control over the Chinese industrial entities and consolidated them into Volvo Car Group as of January 1, 2015. As the incorporation of these entities is a common control transaction, Volvo Car Group has elected to apply predecessor accounting, meaning that the comparative information is presented as if the incorporated entities had always been controlled by Volvo Car Group. More information can be found in the Group's Interim Report First Half Year 2015.

Volvo's report of 57K orders globally isn't volume that will save the company and it needs a savior. Good sales would be a huge surprise given how agricultural the 4 cylinder is, how numb than steering/handling are, and how stupidly overpriced it is. With the XC90 you pay premium prices for a near-premium brand. WHY???

I don't know where all this nay saying is coming from but KUDOS to Volvo for one helluva product.

The XC90 is a vehicle that will further elevate Volvo and have it crossed shopped with Germans more often than not.

I already said I'd take one of these over the new Q7 in a heartbeat. If Volvo follows up this threat with is dean lineup, they may be on to something big!

@Cars4Life: I TOTALLY Agree with you on this one. This is a winner. A colleague professor at the college just got her new XC90 late last week. She had to wait to get hers. It is GORGEOUS inside. Volvo has always had beautiful looking interiors; especially their comfortable seats. Though they don't have a V6 in this vehicle, I think it will be just fine. They have the SUPERCHARGE and Turbo-charge going with this; pumping out 316 HP. Not bad for a 4 banger. I own an Audi S6 and like this better than any of Audi's SUVs. It looks bold on the front end and has a good stance. My only concern might be reliability, but maybe with the new company owners they'll right the ship. It's not a MB but I would take it over that South Carolina built X3 and maybe the Audi A7/A5 (which next year will be built in Mexico - were they build POOR quality vehicles).

@Car4Life...you clearly have not driven one. The boosted 4 cylinder has NVH and refinement issues that BMWs and Mercedes at the same price point simply do not have.

-MDarringer, unfortunately about 7 out of 10 drivers on the road could care less whats under the hood and are more concerned about overall ride quality/features/gas mileage.

My girlfriend is more concerned with the backup camera, blind spot assist, and adaptive cruise control lol, and I have a feeling most of the soccer moms and disappointed Q7 owners picking this bad boy up, feel the same.

The new XC90 is a truly beautiful and premium product. Don't criticize it until you have sat in one in the dealer or even driven one.

Yes, the 4-cyl is perhaps a little course, but for most Americans who sit in traffic or putter on the school run or to the mall, it works just fine. The interior is one of the nicest on the market (nicer than MB and BMW and Acura and Lexus) and the exterior is very sleek and handsome. Its also grown in scale to, I think, completely nail the "sweet-spot" for size that Americans want.

Great job Volvo - keep up the good work.

I looked a one a few weeks ago and holy crap it was gorgeous inside. The interior is better than any Mercedes SUV by far. I found the technology cool to... Not only that there are a bunch of uTube Videos showing the safety of the car, it very impressive. Top of the line car is over $70K which is heady territory but again, the interior is extremely premium...Mercedes SUV's can eclipse $70K easily but leather is optional, go figure...

I drove my college XC90 and there are NO REFINEMENT ISSUES as our no it all Matt says. As a matter of fact, there was a recent story in the Detroit News Automative section recently talking about where Volvo engineers tested this vehicle in EXTREME conditions during concept for almost 1 MILLION miles The engineers spoke in this article where a portion of this testing was done actually done along side Ford's aluminum truck's 10 million miles test period. (I'm from Detroit, Michigan so I still subscribe to the Detroit News)

I have to laugh when MATTIE thinks he knows everything about every vehicle, about every imaginable issue. We should have him run for Office. Volvo will be just fine; they and have a nice product if they follow through to ensure quality control here. I think they know the importance of this vehicle. So far it's been successful.

i think its one of the nicest cars in its class. A+ for volvo with this solid attempt. looks different and just sophisticated. also nice to have a new comer. q7, x5, acadia denali, gl450, all nice cars. The volvo is good enough to take sales from any of those.

It is a very interesting first result from new ownership. We'll see if they can replicate in sedans/wagons and down the range. If so, Volvo will be on a very good trajectory.
