Nissan Abandoning Purists By Transforming 370Z Into A CROSSOVER!

Nissan is preparing a radical sports crossover to bring its famous Z badge back to the masses - and the new model is poised to hit showrooms within the next 18 months.

The Japanese brand has been weighing up a variety of options on where to take the famous Z brand as the current 370Z is phased out by 2017. It has considered a higher-powered sports car and a cheaper, more basic four-cylinder model - as previewed by the iDx compact coupé concepts that were revealed at the Tokyo motor show in 2013.

One could argue they abandoned the Z Car a long time ago, pretty much stagnant for the last decade.

Sadly, I'd agree (AGAIN) with 009. I had a 2006 350Z and absolutely loved it though it wasn't the car that the ZX was. But since then it's been pretty lukewarm despite the Nismo version. And the styling is just not appealing.

Actually - using the "z" designation as their high performance line indicator (Such as "M" or "AMG") is a logical thing - and I suspect would be a net gain if the performance merited the designation.

And while Nissan may produce SUVs that have z- designations for the performance models - they will never "replace" the z car with an SUV

I hope this means Nissan has been working hard on a new FX/QX70 & is considering Nissan variants now that they're really a decade behind their competitors.

Stupid is the only word that goes here. Its like turning a Mercedes SL into a SUV Coupe... Why not just develop the SUV Coupe and call it useless transportation and then develop a sports car worth of the Z name? Suppose the name and what it stands for is dead to younger people, so why not remind them? Morons.... Morons....

Nissan can no longer build anything. SUV Z? Not that surprising to be honest, considering how they can no longer build the GT-R on their own.

The Japanese should just keep making those, cheap, reliable appliances.

Seriously poor marketing by Nissan!
This shows that Nissan has lost its identity and direction.

Just go back to basics- Make a FR/miata fighter with 2 liter turbo for under 30K. Make a super version with a 3 liter or less twin turbo or supercharged for 40+ K.
If they want to make a Range Rover Evoque competitor for under 30K with the same chassis, why not. Just dont call it a Z. Z is not enough for a sub-brand. I'd say maybe even reserve the 6 cylinder forced inducted versions for infiniti and Nismo. Infiniti could use more umph too.

I was downvoted somewhat when I said that Nissan has become very disappointing. But I will continue to stand by my words, especially if THIS is what we're treated to from here on out. Man, I remember when Nissan was so sporty and now... :-/

The current Z is a failure because Nissan did not sweat the details. It has brake issues. At the track, brake fade is a massive issue in the 350/370Z. In street use, the 370Z eats brake pads at an alarming rate. The transmission can grenade itself. The styling is ugly as sin. Now factor in its near-Corvette pricing and that for $33K a Mustang 5.0 will obliterate it and you have an epic fail of a product.

The Z would work if Nissan made it a Japanese pony car aimed at the comparably sized Mustang and Camaro. Outfit it similarly. Price it similarly. Style it like the 240Z and watch sales happen.

MDarringer- never thought of the Z as a Japanese pony car. Never was. I do agree having styling that harkens back to the 240 is not a bad idea. Focus on handling, build quality, and have turbo 4 and forced induction 6 options and you have a winner. Now maybe a coupe based on the GTR with 2wd , different engine options, you could make a competitor for the Mustang and Camaro, and make the case for another GTR to happen(having a mass produced chassis that shares parts with a 100K car is not a bad idea)
. The luxury version could be the infinti.

Ponycar is where the money is in the segment. Hyundai IS taking the Genesis coupe in that direction to get in on a slice of the BIG Mustang/Camaro gravy train.
