Audi Continues Forward Momentum In August With 9.9% Increase In Monthly Sales

Audi achieved its best-ever August sales in the U.S. to mark its 56th consecutive monthly sales record. The previous August record was set in 2014 with 17,101 Audi vehicles sold. Through the first eight months of 2015, Audi U.S. sales rose 12.1% from last year to 116,066 vehicles.

August 2015 only trails the December 2014 all-time monthly record of 19,238 vehicles sold.

August results were bolstered by sales of Audi luxury SUVs, with a 40.9% increase for the Audi Q3, Q5 and Q7 models combined. The Q5 posted a 34.4% increase from last year, marking its best-ever sales month in the U.S. The Q7 posted an 8.4% increase from last August.

A key August 2015 sales highlight was the strong launch of the all-new Audi TT. In its first full month of U.S. market availability, the third-generation sports car line turned in a 259.3% sales improvement from a year earlier.

“The fast start for the technologically advanced Audi TT perfectly encapsulates the ingredients of Audi momentum over these past 56 months,” said Mark Del Rosso, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Audi of America. “It is a story built on steady dealer investments, relentless new product development and a determination to be an industry leader in dramatic technologies such as the fully digital cockpit found in the TT models.”

The A3 model line achieved robust sales led by the Audi A3 Cabriolet models in August 2015. The compact premium models achieved a 31.2% increase over year-earlier sales. The Audi A7 model also performed well, with a year-over-year increase of 11.0%.

The A3 continues to trounce the CLA. Audi needs to improve its China sales while keeping up the consistently terrific progress in U.S. sales. With the way the Chinese market is doing, that might be easier said than done.

I think 2015's global sales race will come down to who can manage the Chinese market the best.

Of course the A3 is doing well because it's taking sales that the A4 would normally get. Chances are, unless there are substantial interior room improvements in the new A4, that trend may not change even with the new A4. They are too similarly styled. They are too similarly sized. The A3 is less expensive.

How is constantly being in the red from A4 to A8 terrific progress? And this includes one of my all time favorites the A7

That said, kudos to the A3 and Q5

The fact that Audi's models are so old and it still manages to be up 12.1% YTD in the US is a testament to how strong the brand is. Once the 1 terFLOP A8 with its Prologue Concept inspired design shows up followed by the new A7 and A6 which will also be Prologue-inspired cars - Audi could very well leave BMW and Mercedes-Benz in the dust in terms of global sales.

The indistinguishable design of the new A4 from the current generation will be a thing of the past as Audi's new head of R&D and design both were in charge of the upcoming A8, A7, A6, as well as brand new Q6, Q8 and A9 models.

The old Audi R&D and design bosses will have had no input in the design of these new models, which I think is extremely positive for Audi in terms of moving in the more aggressive and differentiation design direction.

Considering how old the Q7 is, it is impressive to see its sales grow.

The fact remains that Audi's sales volume in the USA and Canada is nowhere near Mercedes or BMW. To say they have have 56 months of sales growth sounds impressive UNTIL you put it in the perspective of just how pathetically they trail Mercedes for sales volume.

I'm sure we will have the same inane crowing about Jaguar's sales increases when the Jaguar XE arrives--ditto Alfa Romeo sales when the Giulia arrives--but the proof is in overall volume NOT percent sales gain.

Reporting the % sales gain for Audi is a National Enquirer move.

You're just looking at the numbers at face value and not the trend. 5+ years ago, MB/BMW sold 3-4 times as many Audi's. Now it's much less than 2x's. That's growth and this is with a smaller and older line up at that.

Globally, Jaguar and Alfa Romeo are not a threat but Audi most certainly is. Audi is right on BMW's heels for the top spot and its new design strategy will be debuting next year with the upcoming A8 and then A7, A6, A9, Q6 and Q8 models thereafter. There are going to be major changes on the horizon for Audi's design strategy in the next 12-24 months and the competition needs to be prepared for significant design changes and differentiation from Audi.
