World’s Most Affordable Supercar? - Corvette Takes On The Elite And Wins, Should It Be In Your Garage Instead Of That Import?

Imagine Target trumping Saks Fifth Avenue. Timex outshining Rolex. Chevy beating Lamborghini.

Actually, that last one should come as no surprise. The Chevrolet Corvette added to its status as the world’s most affordable supercar this summer as it emerged the king of the 2015 Car & Driver Lightning Lap competition at Virginia International Raceway - out-running such thoroughbreds as the $353,115 McLaren 650S Spider, $274,120 Lamborghini Huracan, and the $163,000 Porsche 911 GT3.

So quick was the $100,245 Z06 — Corvette’s 650-horsepower performance model — that in the nine-year history of the famed Lightning Lap only one car has ever recorded a faster time: The 2014 Porsche 918 hybrid, a carbon-fiber cyborg from the future that costs nearly nine times the Corvette. The $875,175 Porsche was faster by a mere 1.5 seconds. That’s over $250,000 per half second.

GM is clearly demonstrating its prowess at building cars built for the track. If you look at the top quarter to half of the Lightning Lap historical times, there are Caddie V's, Camaros, and Corvettes all over the list. Pretty impressive. Now, if they could only get all the other things right (drab interiors, exploding engines, CUE, boring styling, etc), then we could be on to something.

The 'Vette is clearly a noteworthy car. The one thing it lacks is the status of the hyper cars. It doesn't say "I blew $350K on these wheels". It arguably even looks better than what Ferrari and Lambo are turning out today.

The Stingray is amazing. it's that simple. It's also that good. Kinda makes you wonder why a Porsche et. al. costs so much more.

Corvette needs to be spun off as a brand

Corvette Manta / V6 RWD coupe/convertible
Corvette Stingray / current Corvettes
Corvette Zora / mid-engine

credit where its due corvette and nissan gtr are boss cars and consistently beat cars 2-3x their price.

I would not buy either but I wouldn't want to be racing one of them either in a european car.
