2016 Audi S4 Caught Sunbathing In The Alps With No Cammo

We've seen the new 2016 Audi A4 range, sneaked in an early prototype drive - and now we've scooped the warmed-over S4 with barely any camouflage at all.

CAR’s spies have captured the upcoming S4 testing in the Alps hooked up to heavy trailers; it's routine testing to put load on the engine, chassis and brakes, and follows our earlier spyshots testing at the Nordschleife, where it was worked pretty hard by the look of those tortured tyres.

When I look at this plethora of straight lines and flat surfaces, I see a form that already looks dated.

For me Audi is going Camry bland. BMW is rehashing all of its cliches. Mercedes is going low-rent, ghetto blind and maybe it's the white trash in me, but I am warming slightly to SOME Mercedes styling. The A4's worst enemy is the A3. This will arrive with money on the hood.

At some point - Audi will need to consider "Something" in each different range that visually sets it apart from the other ranges of cars they make. As long as they continue to make all their cars look virtually the same - they will continue to be a small car seller.

Audi's minimalist approach sometimes goes against their attempt to be top tier.

I see the current black A4 but not the new A4? The reason why I will not be buying one.

When I picture designers from BMW, Mercedes, and even most Lexus cars, I picture guys/gals with T-shirts, torn jeans, disheveled hair, a few piercings, maybe tattoos, kneeling before clay models of cars with their chisels and getting down and analyzing every line and curve, with their tongues hanging halfway out of their mouths as they squint to make sure every surface is perfect.

When I picture designers of these new Audis, I picture a bunch of guys/gals with white lab coats, all with black shirts and gray dress pants, with their tablets and electric pens, measuring every line perfectly, all standing about 6 feet away from the initial concept drawing.

What a shame, the next A4 looks DOA, it looks like it should have been an LCI from three to four years ago

Fortunately for Audi, the next-generation A8, A7 and A6 sedans, brand-new A9 coupe, Q6 and Q8 SUVs will be SIGNIFICANTLY MORE differentiated from any current version and between each other.

Audi's new heads of R&D and design made this their number one goal in order to drive increased sales.

The trend will start with the upcoming A8 before filtering down to the A7 and A6 models.
