While that is one of the causes - there is another

Audi, BMW, and Mercedes have started to produce cars that are priced in line with higher end versions of lower mid-size cars from Ford and Toyota. WHile these cars are actually smaller - people look at them as being a premium car -even though they are not as premium as they would seem - so they but the "Name". It is a status thing - and THAT is what fueled the BMW 3 series for years.

If you actually look at the sales of these three - you will see that it only Mercedes that actually sells well in larger more luxurious cars - THe 7 series rarely sells well outside of Germany - and the A8 is a non-starter. And that is because Mercedes styles its LARGE car first - and them makes the others look somewhat like it - rather that style the SMall car first - which gives the large car less presence. AUdi - especially - has gone too far in making all of its cars look alike - so why buy and A8 - it looks from afar just like an A4
