BMW And Mercedes Claim They Are Not Cheaters When Comes To Clean Diesels
BMW and Daimler say their diesel-powered vehicles comply with U.S. clean air rules.

Their comments come after the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said on Friday that fellow German automaker Volkswagen used software for diesel VW and Audi branded cars that deceived regulators measuring toxic emissions. VW could face up to $18 billion in penalties.

BMW and Daimler's Mercedes-Benz have targeted the U.S. as a market for their diesel vehicles..

Stupid EPA?????

Stupid Volkswagen ! It took Audi about 15 years to overcome its "unintended acceleration" scandal and (although the VW quality may still be sub-par) VW has had some recent sales success with buyers starting to overlook some shoddy build issues.

This whole thing is going to remind people that the folks who run VW very well be lying shysters, though at least the software code did not end up killing people, like GM's ignition key fiasco did. Even worse for VW - it sort of seems that some/many of VW's top management may well have known about the software fraud.

Anybody in business knows that (while not desirable) you can lie to your customers, you can lie to your suppliers, you can certainly lie to your employees, but never, ever, lie to the US government because it will cost you in fines and some execs may very well do jail time.

At first glance, this may seem like a victimless crime, but I suspect this VW diesel-software-gate scandal may be bigger than the Toyota/Lexus unintended acceleration probe and the GM ignition key probe, combined.

This is a big deal.

What's crazier, GM's fines look like a rounding error to the reaming VW is about to receive.

Further - this will set back the acceptance of diesels in America.

I drive an MB GL350 Blutec which is a fantastic vehicle - it weighs 6,000 pounds, seats 7, and I get 22MPG in city and 27MPG on highway - heck highway range is about 650 miles, which is astonishing.

It would be a shame if this stupid lie derailed diesels in America, because, bar-none (electrics, hybirds, Tesla's, etc) Diesel cars are the most friendly to the environment. The fuel efficiency is excellent but more importantly, there is no "toxic production chain" of battery production, disposal, and replacement.

What is more likely to be on the road in 10 years and still working great - my MB GL diesel or a 10 year old Tesla? How many people have a 10 year old cell phone or 10 year old laptop - no one! At a certain level, electric cars will come to be "disposable" just like phones and laptops.

I have a GL350 as well and it does great in the city and my wife loves it. I still love my old e30 though. It is indestructible and has bailed me out countless times.only thing I hate about the GL is the way it shifts. I loved the DSG Transmission we had in our Passat TDI.

Didn't take long for the other brands to twist the knife. I do commend their promptness though.
